UOA by Oil Analyzers:
Overall severity of report--------3 (abnormal)

LAB COMMENTS: Viscosity is SIGNIFICANTLY HIGH; Is the grade as identified correct? Please advise; Infrared results indicate OXIDATION is MODERATELY HIGH; LEAD is at a MINOR LEVEL and may be OVERLAY METAL from MAIN/ROD BEARINGS; Flagged additive levels are lower than expected for the lubricant that is identified. (This does not imply that the lubricant does not meet proper API, SAE or ISO classifications.); Lubricant change acknowledged;

NOTES/COMMENTS:
This is my brother's truck. Probably around 60% highway, 40% city. Substantial towing apprx 1300# trailer. He said he was getting around 24 mpg (should be around 28). Maybe the oil got too thick for proper bearing lubrication, but protected great otherwise. ppm per 1k miles for copper down since last UOA. Think there’s any relation between the Auto-RX & the oil thickening? TBN holding up well.

PREVIOUS ANALYSIS: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubb...true#Post945029

OIL CHANGED TO: 3 to 1 ratio of Amsoil ASL 5W-30/Amsoil ASM 0W-20. If I had known the ASL thickened so much, I’d have made it 2 to 1 or 1 to 1 ratio ASL/ASM.

I would use a paper air filter.
Leave the Auto-RX out.
Change the oil at 12K
Use the Amsoil 10-30 in Florida.

If you stay with Amsoil and want the warranty to not be voided if the poop hits the fan, stay under 12 months. I think 12K is a decent OCI with this oil and oil filter.

For the number of miles on this OCI if you look at PPM/1000 miles it is actually a pretty good report..IMO These labs in many cases do not look at the miles on the OCI just the wear number itself. I wish many of my UOA had these low numbers at far fewer miles. Nothing in double digits for wear metals, silicon slightly elevated but 13,000 miles so really not bad.

I would not at all be concerned and if you continue to use UOA the trend will be the real story teller, not one UOA

I don't think it's so bad,but.......don't run it past the earlier of 10k or when mpg begins to drop.

Looks ok, but the viscosity is up by 36% which is above the 15% limit. Si is high. The strong Tbn suggests the engine is clean IMO. I don't think ARx did anything.

I'm not sure why OAInc said they additives are lower than normal? Ca looks fine, if not a tad high. Boron does get taken up over time.

Those wear numbers look really good for the miles I think and TBN is still very good.

I am confused I guess. Does Viscosity usually go up or down with age?

Boron was flagged as abnormally low.

Based on UOA's I've seen, viscosity of this oil does tend to gradually increase with miles, but nothing like it did here. I suspect Auto-RX somehow caused the excessive thickening here.

ASL never does good in yoto's. TBN looks okay but your OXD and NIT look really high..YMMV

This oil may have been in storage for a couple years--in an enclosed barn in FL.
New sample results due in about a week (3:1 ratio Amsoil ASL to ASM + 3 oz Auto-RX, 12,175 miles, apprx 1 year).

Older Amsoil had 'issues' with thickening. New stuff doesn't.

Looking forward to the upcoming report....
