That's exactly the point I was trying to make. I was stating, however, that it doesn't behave as a classic 30W at low temperatures. For all I know there are applications out there that might call for 30W where this is important (compressors, pumps, who knows) so it's worth stating.

Check the datasheets for any version of Mobil 1 10w30 and the ASE. There's little difference in viscosity or viscosity index. The Mobil 1 is somewhat thinner and has a lower pour point. Looking back through some of the old Mobil 1 VOA's the Mobil 1 probably has a higher TBN too.

Those things don't tell all of what's important in a OPE oil though.

I'm just not sure why anyone would use the ASE vs off the shelf Mobil 1 10w30. If you want to use Amsoil in your OPE the ACD seems to be better in every way, the only inconvenience being it's not available in quarts...

While it's true that VI on the data sheets might be the same, the data sheets don't list whether VIIs are added or not.

Maybe cruise the used oil analysis to see if any show Mobil 1 10W30 shearing? Possibly someone out there on BITOG knows for sure...

As for ASE/ACD, quart availability is a big thing when an OCI is a half a quart a year. Frankly I'm not sure what the other differences are but I'd be interested to know. I don't think a rediculously high TBN is that important with fairly short OCIs for OPE, and the TBN of ASE isn't that shabby to begin with (isn't it around 9?) Amsoil made ASE for a specific purpose, and it was available in quarts, so that's what I got...

I don't mind the Gal jugs, i bought two jugs of ACD so i got enough for awhile and don't have all them QT's to find room for, plus i think it's cheaper by the gal.

i buy MCV in Gal's too for my ATV's

The Mobil 1 10w30 used oil analysis don't seem to show much if any shearing, even in long drain applications.

The high TBN isn't of itself a great thing, but in the case of a comparison of ASE to ACD, it does show there is a difference in chemistry.

I agree the ASE is being sold for a specific purpose. But it's unclear to me if that's mostly a marketing one...
 
I, too, am not sure if the purpose is simply marketing. I'm not certain that smaller outfits like Amsoil would bother to have a marketing-only release of a unique formulation for outdoor power equipment instead of just recommending a formula they already have...

Something is nagging in my memory that corrosion fighting additives may be much higher in ASE due to long elapsed time/low running time OCIs, off-season storage protection and the like. Again, if true, that's well suited to OPE.
 
There could be additional corrosion fighting additives in ASE. I'd think we'd see it in TBN though. In any case I don't doubt it's a good product. Maybe some of the Amsoil guys could tell us how it differs from their other oils.

Also, I may have gotten too cynical. Too many new improved Sludge Protection, Startup, Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, etc. oils on the shelves that look remarkably like other oils from the same companies. But being sold at higher prices...
 
You are correct JSharp most of the time we are paying for psychological satisfaction when we purchase any of these specialty oils. More and more they begin to look similiar when cracked open. And to you guys comparing Amsoil to Mobil 1, it could very well be that they are the same product or at least base oil. Remember Amsoil is a blending plant, they buy their syn bases off the open market and only a few companies have technology to produce Synthetics.

I sent some ASE questions to Amsoil. They replied within hours - kudos to them. Take this info as you see fit:

"In review of your noted application, our preferred recommendation would be the use of the AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke, Small Engine oil product code ASE. We would suggest this product over the AMSOIL ACD for several reasons. The first would be that the ASE addresses oil consumption common in small engines to a greater degree than the ACD product. Secondly the ASE utilizes additive chemistry more appropriate for a gasoline application such as you Kawasaki whereas the ACD is more directed toward heavy duty diesel applications. Should your equipment be used on a seasonal basis, the ASE would also offer a higher degree of protection during those periods on prolong inactivity. The ASE was developed as a straight SAE 30 grade product. The natural low temperature properties of its synthetic base stock however allows it to meet the low temp performance requirements of a multi-grade 10w30 oil. Indeed, this product is suitable for use in application calling for a straight grade SAE 30 fluid. We hope you will find this helpful and should questions remain, please let us know."

I wish he would have given technical details.....oh well.
 
wow i never get a reply that fast usually two three days,
i still like the ACD i get zero oil consumption not a drop
plus i like the 12 TBN.

what corrosion are there if a HDEO oil is run? The marine companies that run diesels in their boats use HDEOS guys give me a break ,I have been to many repair facilities. There are the people who read the info sheets but don't have a clue on the subject they are trying to understand

Honestly - most of my questions are now over the head of most of the techs. Not putting them down, but I have to go to the bosses with greater than 50% of my questions.

The ASE/ACD questions have been fairly constant since ASE was released. And I'll say the tech above did a pretty good general answer. You must realize they cannot give formula information out. I will say this, ASE does have some proprietary organic (in the sense it's made with carbon, vs semi metallic elements) anti-rust additives that simply won't show up in a $20 used oil analysis, nor do they strongly effect TBN. This stuff is not in the ACD. ACD is great because of that STRONG TBN, and as noted does great in storage.

As for designed for gasoline engines vs. diesel engines.... I'm not sure, other that it may have some different FM's that are better with high and varying RPM's in a smaller sump, vs. a huge sump with steadier RPM's.
 
I was not trying to bash the tech.

Just making a joke that BITOG folks like a lot of specific tech info.......... But as you say they can't give away the farm.
