I'm a newbie and kinda screwed up my first post on my 2008 GTI a few days ago. I have the site figured out now and wanted to repost on my S4 which is also a direct injected engine. Same question here regarding the TBN. After just 6,600 miles it's been thrashed to 2.3 from a 8.0 starting point. I know at 2.3 there is still a level of protection. Just curious to see what the smart guys on this forum think about this oil. Any thoughts about the wear metals?

I've always been a fan of AMSoil in the past. But curious to see what you guys think about switching to either Pennzoil Untra (PU) 5w40 Euro or to German Castrol (0w30). All these oils meet the VW 502.00 requirement.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or thoughts.

If you are looking for a differant oil why not look at M1 0-40 with a starting TBN of 11.8 and meets the 502 spec?

It's a decent report IMO, other than the viscosity. Realize though that this oil much like most xw40's will shear in service. Not bad though.

You had great filtration, great wear #'s you will have a car that will have ZERO oil related problems in the future running this lube. I would not change a thing. Tig1 will always tell you to run XOM products...lol. If I were you I would have just found my oil for this vehicle. No need for any UOA's for a long time.

As for TBN Blackstone is always a couple of points lower, I don't know if it is to cover their ___ but you have an engine that can really shear oils...this is an outstanding report! 10k is easy.

He did ask for suggestions. He was concerned about a low TBN and M1 0-40 may help in this area.

Thank you for the responses guys...

So now that I know how to post...here is the entire history of my engine so far. All UOA are via Blackstone.

The factory fill was rumored to be Fuch's 5w40.

The second UOA was German Castrol.

The third UOA was AMSoil Euro 5w40.

Each subsequent UOA was the AMSoil Euro also.

I change my own oil so that is how I can justify doing a UOA on each oil change. My dealership charges $110 do to an oil change on this car.

Thank again...

Looks good to me. Just stick to the Amsoil 5W-40 and 5K OCI's, and call it a day.

How many quarts does this engine hold?

There is an oil we sell where I work called Service Pro, that is fairly inexpensive (6 quart case of synthetic for around $23 in most viscosities), and they have a 5w-40 (slightly more expensive at $26) that meets VW 502.

http://www.service-pro.com/documents/lubs/lubs_motoroils/SP fullSyn 5w40.pdf

There is a distributor in Saint Louis that sells it. Would you be interested in running it and doing a UOA? I've always been curious how it would perform.

That looks like a really good report.

With a TBN of 2.3, you could go to about 7500 miles on that interval safetly, which isn't bad at all the a car like an S4.

If you want, give M1 0W-40 a try - it certainly won't hurt, but if you like Amsoil, I'd stick with what you are using.

This looks like a great report on a TSI engine, which are know to beat down oils and have high wear numbers. I'd stick with your current regimen.

Yep! You have found an oil that will give you wonderful service for 7,500+ with all kinds of "wiggle room" in your OCI.

Now, the hard part...

Finding it on $ale!

Cheers!

Those are low TBN's for an oil that "claims" to have long life approval--what a bunch of garbage.

Go with the M1 that is proven to go longer as actually has real long life approvals with bench testing to back it.

VWoA would love to deny an engine claim warranty because you didn't use an "approved" oil.

These boutique oils are probably ok out of warranty but don't take chances on a pricey European ride.

Can't compare LL01 to LL04 regarding starting TBN. (bottom report is actually 5w30 mislabeled as 5w40)

The AMSoil 5w40 European Formula IS a VW 502.00 approved oil for my S4.

I just picked up a 12 pack of PU Euro 5W40...gonna try that on my next oil change for kicks.

Approved by whom? Don't get me wrong, I like Amsoil, support Amsoil, have used Amsoil, will use it again in the future, but there is a cut-and-dry approved list. AFL is not on it. Amsoil is one backing you up on this.

I hear ya...I'm achieving very good wear numbers with the AMSoil. And they say it's 502.00 approved... But I understand what you are saying since it's not on the 'VW' approved list.

I'm going to try another one that I don't think is on the list...Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w40.

I have a GTI that I'm going to test with German Castrol.

Do a little comparison between the 2 oils and the 2 engines and see what the results look like.
