No surprises at all. Both are low SAPS oil, which will be the trend in the coming future. Starting TBN will be much lower, thanks to the low sulphur fuel.

The reformulated AFL is also suitable for use in VW 502.00 gas applications, so it'll be interesting to see how well it holds up during the 10k service interval.

With a starting TBN no higher than that of a conventional oil, doesn't it make you question the importance of a high starting TBN, for long drains?

I've run the new AFL to 15,000 miles in my '97 VW TDI with mostly low sulfur diesel. TBN retention is better with ULSD and new fuel additives.

AFL wasn't built to be an extended drain oil like the company's other products. The DEO isn't automatically an extended drain product either.

I'm running DEO in my '97 TDI now and look forwarding to comparing the life and wear to the 5W-40 AFL and 10W-40 AMO CI-4+ oil. I expect the DEO to give lower rates of wear.

I've got some reports of the AFL in VW gas service and it does very, very well beyond the 10K or 1 year VW OCI.

Good to hear. I plan to use AFL if I buy a Jetta 2.5L in the coming year.
