Didn't the 5w20 Amsoil also change from using a Group IV base to a Group III base oil? Is this test a reflection of the group III oil, not "technically" a full synthetic as some are alleging this product is?

If this is his first interval with this oil, and his previous oil was Mobil 1 Trisynthetic, then the magnesium is leftover from the previous oil. TriSyn uses a lot of magnesium, and keep in mind when you change your oil you could have as much as one quart of the previous oil still in your engine (depending on engine design)

This looks like a test of the current SL/GF-3 rated, Group III based synthetic. When Amsoil went to the Group III basestock, they also improved the additive chemistry at the same time. The physical/chemical properties of the new stuff are better than their original formulation, particularly for the 5w30 and 5w-20 grades.

All the oil used in this vehicle was Amsoil 5W-20, since the first oil change at 1,000 miles. Total of 7 oil changes, Mobil 1 TriSyn or any other oil was never used.

Was the previous 5w20 fill with the older PAO stuff and maybe it had magnesium in it then?

I understand that Amsoil changed their formula in July? The 'used oil' I tested was purchaed in August and the 'Amsoil guys' will have to determine if it was the new formula or the old formula. It is reasonable to believe that all the earlier changes were with the 'old' formula. I do not know what that means, all of you are much better informed that I am on oil properties. My goal was to validate the protection 5W-20 was providing, and the results were positive for my vehicle and test. Everyone has to make their own decision as to the oil they use. I am very close to the end of my warranty, and I also will be at a decision point to continue with 5W-20 or switch to 5w30. I currently use Amsoil 5w30 in my '01 Maxima.

Tooslick, that's what I thought. I've got no issues with that other than the whole is it syn question. Thats for another time and arguement somewhere else!
I was just trying to point out that some elses arguement may be based on a flawed point, although I don't think anything will change their mind!
Go figure. I'd be happy if this were my truck and I was seeing these numbers based on the numbers I see out of my trucks with the same engine running 5w30.
One thing this shows is that if you run the same oil for several changes in a row, you will get better results than switching oils and additive chemistries all the time. This oil is working fine in this engine - I wouldn't go to the Amsoil 5w30 unless you were seeing oil consumption problems or wanted to run significantly longer change intervals.

Your statement that a 0 ppm lead is evidence of no bearing wear may not be true in all cases. Some engines do use a copper/lead/tin plated main and connecting rod bearings while the majority of Detroit engines use an aluminum alloy plating in these bearings. Does anyone know what the Ford modular V-8 use from the factory?

According to Ford, for my 2002 4.6L V-8 the main bearings and the rod bearings have an aluminum-lead silicon alloy surface and the camshaft bearings are aluminum.

Havoline makes a 5w20 conventional oil too ($1.58/quart)....or am I missing something here?
I am going to put it in my wife's 1998 Expedition after this ARx cycle.
