Amoco gas stations have started to reappear after being gone for decades after the BP take over. Is the Amoco gasoline just the same as BP or is it a different formulation?

Exact same thing.
BP stations actually sell Amoco fuel.
They probably decided to bring back the name for additional franchising opportunity.
Frankly, they should have kept the Amoco name and nixed the BP name here in the states, especially after the debacle in the Gulf.

One opened in Mocksville NC about a year or so ago. Used to be Shell, then went to something else, Citgo I think, for few years, now Amoco.
I remember the "white gas" they used to sell. Wouldn't use anything else in my '75 BMW motorcycle. LOL

BP has been re-introducing the brand since 2017 and has over 900 Amoco branded stations across the country according to BP, who still owns it. Most are shown to be in Michigan. The fuel is sold as "Amoco" with BP's additive Invigorate, however, the Ultimate is not like the Ultimate of old. It used to be highly marketed for it's clarity and called things such as "crystal clear" "clearly better" and "white gas". Their focus on this was the lack of (or greatly reduced) polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNA). The marketing was that this "cleaner" fuel did not leave varnishes and deposits of traditional gasoline. Urban legend had it that the Ultimate was transported in it's own pipeline to prevent contamination with "dirty" fuel. To my knowledge, this was bull hooey and never verified. I still used Amoco almost as exclusively as possible, and am glad it's coming back as a brand.

BP brought the Amoco brand back to provide another "Brand" for their independent franchise owners to market gas under. There were many franchise owners who own multiple locations in a similar geographic area (in some cases on the same corner) that the Amoco brand provides another apparent choice to consumers who may say they don't want to buy BP gas...

The irony here is in that BP killed off the Amoco brand that was so well known in parts of the country to go to BP - which for example in the upper midwest meant nothing... And now its coming back...

Also funny to see Phillips 66/Conoco who left the upper midwest announced it was going to offer opportunites in this market again... What's old is new again...

According to their website "

Quality gas, guaranteed

When you choose Amoco, you know you’re choosing the best for your car – like Amoco gasoline with Invigorate®, better fuel made to better your engine. And thanks to America’s longest-standing fuels guarantee, in the unlikely event that you experience any fuel-related problems, we’ll cover the repair costs"

They said they're back

A well-run station near me went through several brands before landing on Amoco about 3 years ago. Due to convenience and the way the station is properly run I buy 98% of my gas there. Their Ultimate is good stuff.
Do they still have the pump handles with the window that shows the little balls moving around when the gas is flowing?

Remember that gasoline is fungible. The refineries pump X gallons into the pipeline, and the depots remove X gallons from the pipeline. What you buy at the Amoco gas station could be from any refinery. The additives are the only thing that's unique from brand to brand.

My mother always used to think that Amoco gasoline was sold by an oil company owned by an Italian family, the "Amoco" family. :)

Amoco was a trademark of the Standard Oil of Indiana company, which BP acquired along with all of the pre-existing trademarks.

When I started driving in New Jersey in the early 1960s, Amoco premium fuel was the only unleaded fuel generally available. That was before the EPA started standardizing all of the properties of gasoline. Today, its all pretty much the same formulation, the only differences being the additive packages.

This. If you see a new Amoco station, look around and you'll probably see an existing BP station nearby.

For those who didn't know, Amoco = American Oil Company. I remember when the stations had the "American" badging before changing signs to "Amoco" in the early 1970s.

From my understanding all Amoco stations offer top tier fuel while BP stations might offer top-tier fuel but it is unknown as BP previously universally offered this but I stopped doing so in recent years.

Neither Amoco or BP are currently listed as Top Tier fuel station brands. My understanding is the brand(s) dropped out of the Top Tier program.

Afraid not.
You go in a BP, you get Amoco branded fuel.
You go in a Amoco, you get Amoco branded fuel.
Same stuff, same company. Different franchise for marketing fuel.
Here is the list of fuel that the Top Tier gods have blessed. Amoco is not on the list:

There has always been a couple Amoco stations here - tiny things, last vestiges of the 70's. Haven't stopped at one in years.

I see them occasionally across the Southeast. I think there are a few around Atlanta and Florida also.
