American Airlines: no more free blankets-- $8 each

Pretty soon we will have to fly the plane ourselves. The good old days when Flying somewhere was a great thing to do.

Go figure. Wouldn't even fly with these thieves anyways. I fly Southwest. Their prices and lack of fees can not be beat.

I'm a Continental fan myself.

I would love to be able to say that too!

Although the "value" proposition is disconcerting, one thing that always struck me is WHY one would EVER want to use an airline pillow...

Are we sure they have been fully sanitized? I find the interiors of airplanes to be pretty gross. Seats well used, who knows how many people have had gas into those cushions. Coughs, sneezes, picked noses, snot wiped on folks' hands...

And then we want to trust the pillows to be clean?!?

I keep my own neck brace that I take with me, and keep it in a bag, easily washed in hot water. Im not trusting pillows and blankets to anyone.

If anything, this is MORE sanitary, as we can be sure that they are new... just like airline earphones.

Flying today is like throwing all your rights out the window. The TSA (Nazi like) are everywhere...asking 'may I see your papers'! Then you get the delight of having a semi-strip search while being scrutinized for ANY nervous behavior (like they don't make you nervous anyway). If you're lucky, like me, you get pulled aside for the 'special' treatment (more complete search...metal detectors between your legs, etc.). After all that fun, you get to head toward your friendly gate as you listen to the TSA warnings and threats over the loud speaker. Don't worry though....before your flight you can treat yourself to a $5 cup-o-joe and a $15 cheeseburger. Next...the boarding starts (generally late...constantly being told not to board until your row is called). Upon finding your seat, you get the great joy of attempting to put your bag in an overhead while everybody else is trying to do the same (as you watch a flight attendent CRAM the bags in as tightly as she can....and yours is usually at the back). No worries though.... as you wait for the aircraft to get permission from the tower to depart (usually late again) you'll get to listen to inevitable coughing and sneezing of ill passengers. Once in the air the oh-so-kindly attendants ask you if you want a small bag of cookies (with a mini-size soda) or a bag of peanuts (usually around six to seven nuts...one time I did count ten however). Ah, the joy of flight! That stale air! And the overweight, perspiring bearded man sitting next to you (or is that a woman?). Such fun!
No......I don't think I will fly anymore either unless I have no other choice. I'm done.

You could say that about the fares that people are willing to pay as well.

Americans want to have their cake and eat it too. Well, something's got to give.

A phrase I've never really understood. I mean it seems perfectly reasonable to want to eat a cake that you have. There's not much else you can do with a cake, except hide in one if your a exotic dancer.

I guess it depends on who/where you fly.

Although I only travel internationally, I have never experienced this despite flying 3 or 4 times per year for the past 4 years. ScanAir for the win - free blankets, free booze and free movies/tv channels/ video games all while never being hasseled by security.

I wouldn't fly American these days anyway. American flies a lot of MD-80 jets, some in such apparent poor shape that they were being investigated by the FAA for substandard repairs. Apparently one of the planes was flown to a maintenance base at low altitude to avoid pressurizing the cabin and stressing the fuselage.

And then there was the Jamaica incident of the plane over shooting the runway.

Also just read today that the FAA is looking to impost a 10 to 20 million dollar fine on AA for serious maintenance lapses, including "multiple faulty repairs of engine-start systems to repeated deferrals of other repairs, as well as mechanics signing off on work without the necessary authority"

Throw in an 8 dollar blanket, and forget about it.

Most of the airlines are struggling these days, if the price of fuel jumps again I can guarantee that one of the carriers will get eaten, just like Delta taking over Northwest.

Sure, I post rants about the TSA... but as somebody who flies on different carriers probably 2-4 times a month, I have to say that you must be doing something wrong.

They have idiotic operations, silly rules, and I don't feel any safer.

Yes, often you get stuck next to an overweight passenger, get marginal food/drink, etc., but the airlines cannot control fuel prices or the obese nature of Americans (getting worse!). And, so long as we want to keep prices low, the airlines have to apply wal-mart like techniques, which is not good for quality or anything else.

Another situation where we did it to ourselves for the most part...

You should have to put a quarter in a slot to get your reading light to work.
