Hello, I have one of the sexiest cars ever made, a 1980 AMC Pacer. It came with the 285 straight six Jeep motor with 41K original miles. Can I switch from conventional 10w-30 to a synthetic 10w-30 or synthetic blend. What are your thoughts ?? Thank You

Neat, unique oddball cars! Love AMC’s!
Would use a 10W-30 HDEO in it myself, but anything will work, very tough engines.
Pics???

Sexy is not a word that I would have ever used to describe the AMC Pacer. Not back then, when it first came out, nor now. Different? Absolutely.

When the was first released, my friends referred to the body style as looking like a pregnant guppy. Car and Driver called it a flying fishbowl. If you were looking for a car with a greenhouse effect, the Pacer was it. In a day when A/C was less common, and even less common in entry level cars, this made for a hot interior.

Today, they do look kind of cool, at least in my opinion. It would be fun to have one in nice condition, to take to car shows. I wonder how many survivors are still around.

Wasn't it the Car of the Year?
No. Actually, MT was pretty critical of the poor performance, terrible braking and overall poor engineering.

My 2 cents would be just run a cheap 10W30, even a dollar store brand oil that meets current API spec's is going to be much better than any oil that this engine was designed for (back in 1964!). They were decent engines, not overly powerful and burnt fuel way out of proportion to the power they produced (as did most American engines in the 70s) but fairly reliable.
