Greetings fellow oilers!
I've been reading your forum for quite some time but this is my first post. After seeing and reading of some of you cutting old oil filters, I decided to give it a try. My father has an old Case 430 tractor, (circa 1965). I just replaced the oil filter last week, FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1981!!!! No kidding! I fully expected this old filter to be completely plugged with gunk. I put it in a vice and cut it apart. I am unable to post pictures - but I was amazed at how clean and good this filter was. The paper element was in good shape with no holes or tears. The rubber gasket inside the filter was a flexiable as the day it was made. It had a heavy duty spring at the top of the paper element and there was a factor made hole at the top of the paper element holder with a copper "door" that was shiny as a new penny. This "door" was held in place with a large spring. Needless to say, I am impressed. The tractor was used on a weekly basis for farm work in dirt, mud and all weathers. The oil was changed on an irregular basis but the filter has been in the tractor for 25 years and still in good shape! The name of the filter is "Fleetguard," (I could barely read it as the paint is very faded). I replaced it with a NAPA gold 1452. I wonder if it will last that long? Just thought you guys might get a kick out of this.

Good story. They don't build them like they used to.

The Fleetguard current part number for your Case is LF3530, so the boys at NAPA gave you the right one.

Just don't cut either the Fleetguard or NAPA open and expect to find the same construction.

Tha copper door and spring was the by-pass valve back then, if memory serves.

Wow. We always love new information even if it upsets our fixed ideas. I think Fleetguard may be part of the Baldwin/Hastings filters. Good news for those that like them.

Oh, copper, or copper plate? Try a magnet.

Labman..know your parent companies..lol

Fleetguard is owned by Cummins Engine Company.

Baldwin is owned by Clarcor.

I have been very impressed with the Fleetguard filters I have run. Unfortunately they have the dome end bypass valve, which I feel is inferior positionwise. So I am sticking with the threaded end bypass Motorcraft and a Purolator Premium Plus with the threaded end bypass (L40017).
