Alternator not charging

Hi everyone,

I have a 4 pin type alternator with F/R terminal wires in a Mitsubishi FTO MIVEC 6A12.

The alternator does not charge. I've replaced the alternator twice now and it still doesn't charge.

I've also replaced the ECU and no difference.

What could this be?

Is there a way to test the alternator to see if it has been damaged by the car?

The regulator should be internal. When the alternator went out on my old Explorer I had it tested. They gave me a print out that showed it was only producing 7 volts.
Take it off the car and to a store that can test it.
 
The big output wire on the alternator must have a path to the battery. It should have battery voltage all the time, and a few tenths of a volt more than battery voltage when the engine is running. If it is volts more than battery voltage, the alternator is working, but the current can't reach the battery due to a bad connection or blown fuse.

One of the small wires powers up the regulator. It should have battery voltage when the key is on. Also does the light on the dash come on with key on engine off, and go out when running?

I will check that:
1. The live wire has 12v when off
2. Check that the small wires - I've done that before and the voltage is between 1 and 5 which I believe is the signal from the ECU and is normal

Since the ECU is logging an error code though which would be a result of the little wires doing something wrong what could the issue be?
And as mentioned is it possible that something is so wrong that it is blowing the alternators?

This is the 3rd alternator with the same issue... and it is getting really expensive to swap them if the car is ruining them

Hi there, I know this is a really old thread but I saw you were active last month. Did you ever find out the issue here? I have a new battery and new alternator with the same issue. It just won't charge at all! Cheers in advance!
 
A basic alternator with internal regulator has a large output wire, then a sense wire which gets voltage all the time and then an excite wire which gets voltage with key on. And ground.
 
Thanks for the replies everyone. As far as I can see the only wires coming from the alternator are the B+ and a 4 pin. I've checked with a multi-meter the current at the start of the B+ cable (the battery) and where it meets the alternator and there's current flowing all the way through. The fuse is OK and hasn't blown too.

Exactly. There is always a protective system on the red main battery cable - it could be a fuseable link or a maxifuse. Seen this many times when people don't disconnect the battery when changing alternators and the touch something metal and get a big spark - which blows the circuit too.

The fuse is OK and hasn't blown. I've ordered a new one just to troubleshoot and be extra safe.

What do you guys think of this? - I tried the trick mentioned above (thanks Chris142) and here's what occurred:

Scenario 1: Car is started without jump lead attached from battery to alternator. Original positive wire from battery to alternator only.
Battery maintains somewhere between 10-11v (dropped to around 9 with headlights, AC and hazard lights on). It's a recently charged and new battery which is why I expected the value is able to maintain some level of consistent power with the electrics in the car off. If left running for 10-30 minutes it would eventually drain.

Scenario 2: Car is started with jump lead attached from positive terminal to alternator (along with the original wire too).
Battery now maintains somewhere between 11 & 12v. Note that this test was done after scenario 1 where the battery dropped to around 9.

I'm trying to not be too optimistic here, but do you think it's possible the wiring to and from the alternator just needs replacing? But then again, with the jump leads attached in scenario 2, you'd still expect the volts to be around 14v. My thinking at the moment is to try scenario 2 again, but try and remove the original positive cable from both the battery and alternator & try it with the jump lead connection only.

I'm desperate to get it to an auto-electrician who will know much more than I do, but without being able to drive the car to them, it's hard to get anyone close by to come take a look - as I live a little out the way.
 
Does this thing have a BMS (battery management system) module? .................. if so - I have seen many vehicles, where, if the battery was not properly coded after battery replacement or simple disconnection even ...................... the BMS simply stops the alternator from charging the battery via the LIN bus control (or whatever technology got implemented on your particular vehicle) .
 
Measure the voltage drop between the alternator output stud and the battery positive terminal with the engine running.

Then you'll know if the wiring needs replacing.
0.03 on the negative side and 0.3 on the positive side - so all good there. The odd thing is that I've just started her up again and for the sake of it measured the battery again, now holding very steady at 12.6v, usually this has been dropping right down to 9 and falling before I bottle it and turn it off. The only other thing I've changed today is new connectors for both positive and negative.

As far as I'm aware they don't, I believe the ECU has a big part in the power management though

Most modern vehicles do that, but the BMS manages the battery in particular..............

eg: Had a Kia here recently with the battery staying alive at 12.4V but not "charging" up to 14.x volts - at any time or any engine speed (this after a battery shop just replaced a dud battery with same spec) ................... still had to go tell the thing the battery was changed and boom - immediately started charging the battery properly and also stop-start started work.

Anyway - just something to keep in mind

0.03 on the negative side and 0.3 on the positive side .................. hmm - I'd say that is too much personally
