I was about to say the same thing you said. Plus I would not of opened my front door at 2:45 AM. Sounds more like a drunk causing trouble in the middle of the night.

Like I said it only takes one assailant. Besides, although I only saw one guy, being dark out I couldn't really tell if there was just one. Later on it sort of sounded like I heard two voices outside. Before I opened the door I had my gun and it looked like it was just one guy standing away from the porch almost out of view so I opened the door. If I hadn't opened the door I wouldn't have been able to tell what was going on outside at all and not opening the door wouldn't have really stopped anything from happening.

When I answered the door my initial impression was it was just some intoxicated bum and I didn't want to hear what he had to say. So I closed the door thinking he'd go away. I thought he did and looked out again and he came back and kept trying to get in. So in that sense opening the door again might have encouraged him. It's easy for someone else to say what they'd do in hindsight or if they were even there.

Never open the front door, call 911 and get your wife/kids into a bathroom with the lights off. Then patiently wait for the cops to arrive. Worse case is that a break in is imminent and you will have your gun aimed at the point of entry. Luckily it wasn't a home invasion but if some thugs did enter your house you would have to unload on them.

Don't mean to be blunt, but opening your door to a stranger at 2 in the morning is just crazy. So many possible scenarios. Maybe he's an innocent drunk, but becomes belligerent when you're facing him and he takes a swing at you, gun goes off, uh-oh. Maybe he's a decoy and when you open the door four other guys appear (with guns). Sorry, maybe I'm a wus (with a S&W M&P) but I'm not opening that door. If HE decides to open the door, then he's mine.

Well that's a valid view not to answer the door at 2 or 3 am. Being in a housing complex there's not too likely a chance that someone would be broke down or legitametly really need assistance. At the time, since I was armed and only saw one person away from the porch I figured I would see what it was about. Plus I figured if they were brazen enough to attack you when you answer the door they would do it without answering the door. But I agree it's probably best to not answer the door that late at night.

This happened to me about 10 years ago when I moved into a new subdivision. Not exactly a home invasion.

The guy was at the wrong house, intoxicated, REAL ticked off at a woman and he was looking for her. I thought he might have come to kill her. He was banging on the door, trying the knob and looking through the windows, etc.

Took the cops over 10 minutes to show up. In the mean time, I had the GF go out to the garage and get a couple of my ball peen hammers. If he was coming in, he was going to lose his knees....or his skull.

Call 911. "There is a man at my door screaming and I think he has a gun....Hey, Hey!!!". Then hang up. The cops will be there yesterday.

i DONT EVER open my door after dark, unless its aranged ahead off time. AND i dont EVER say if i have or dont have a gun. i could tell a story about uncle James and aunt Sue that would be VERY upsetting. but dont have time. in a fight a pair of pliers can do a lot of damage, and its NOT a lethal weapon.
