I looking for some all terrains for an 02 ford super crew 4x4, 285/75/16. The bf goodrich ta/ko's seem to be rated the toughest and wear a long time, but don't clear mud to good.Has anyone had any experience with Cooper ST or the Kelly Safari MTS.D I don't want a mud tire but at least an AT. that will clear. If not any of these any suggestions. Thanks

I just put a set of Kelly/Discounttire Pathfinder A/Ps on my Dad's Blazer. After trudging through 4 foot snow drifts from our recent blizzard, they are the best tires we've had on it. Never had BFG A/Ts but we did have Long Trail T/As which SUCKED.

The Kelly's have a pretty aggressive all terrain tread pattern but they do have channels for better rain/slush conditions compared to BFG A/Ts. I'd bet they are better in mud compared to BFG A/Ts as well, and much better on ice as they have more siping.

The picture doesn't do them justice; they look way more meaty in person. They are a value line so tread life probably isn't the greatest, but they are roughly $50 less per tire than the BFGs. Only a 40,000 mile tire, but keep em rotated and balanced and they'll go the distance. FWIW

They also have an All Terrain tire that mimics the BFG A/T tread pattern.

They may only have the Pathfinder A/T in your tire size though. Looks like the A/Ts have a bit more channeling compared to BFGs.

If you really need excellent mud traction, you could go with BFG Mud T/As and get them safety siped to make them more capable on road/on ice/in rain. Many many guys go that route.

Had the BFG A/T KO's on a 2500 Dodge diesel quad-cab 4x4; you couldn't GIVE them to me again!

They were the WORST set of tires I have ever had; and I've had a few sets of Crapyear (goodyear) as well.

I've owned trucks all my life and have always had a set of A/T tires; have had Bridgestone's, Goodyears, Firestone, Cooper, Pathfinder, Yokohama Geolander's.

Top two sets of all time: Bridgestone Revo's & Yokohama Geolander A/T II's

Currently have the Yok's on 3 different trucks - '01 Diesel 4x4; '04 Tacoma 4x4; and a '97 Rodeo 4x2

Those BFG's did more slipping & sliding in the snow, ice, rain, and they wore HORRIBLY - even with every 3-5k mile rotations and constant proper PSI.

If it tells you anything, at the time that the BFG's were on my diesel, I had Bridgestone Revo's on my 4x2 Rodeo then; the diesel got stuck on our property in the least amount of slush with more than half the tread still remaining on it's tires - that 4x2 Rodeo pulled the diesel out.

A day later, Discount was eating half the cost of a set of replacement tires.

If you want a tire that can last forever you should look into michelin LTX AT's. They're pretty quiet with good traction. They'll last a ridiculously long time.

I like my BFG AT KOs and granted, they don't clear mud off too well, they still get the job done for everything else.

Try these:
Toyo Open Country A/Ts or M/Ts (heard the M/Ts are awesome and a lot of Jeep owners like the A/Ts and have them)
Cooper Discoverer STT or something like that
Cooper Discoverer ATR... read a review about them from Australia and they did quite well.

I run these tires on my Yukon. Exactly right. I love them.

Have both Jeeps wearing B.F.G All Terrains for winter and fall moose/deer hunts....balanced right they are a great tire and will buy again!

Love my BFG TA/KO's. I've had them in sloppy mud up the the axles with the XJ stuffed with me and my hunting buddies, no trouble, and they aren't considered a great mud tire. They are great on dirt and gravel, so so in the snow, I wouldn't drive them on ice, I have studded snows for that. If I do buy them again for the XJ I'll step up to a 31". Oh, they wear great, but the 30" x 9.5" on my XJ are louder than my studded snows!!

been selling Cooper SST since newest tread design came out. ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS. Have access to Kelly's but would never sell them unless someone came in asking for them,,,probably not then if I knew them!

You know I do wonder if the BFG A/T KO's are a better tire on a light-weight vehicle cause they do get rave reviews.

But, I got to say, I would never use them on a vehicle heavier then a half-ton.

There have been times I wanted to try them on my lighter trucks, but am so afraid to pay their asking price to end up in the same situation.

Sold private label "STAR" brand Kelly's for years. Material content and quality controll seem to have gone down steadily. Kelly discontinued STAR, now their namebrand product just doesn't seemn hold up nearly as well in same conditions Cooper excells in.

Overpriced, low quality. No real difference from Goodyear (parent company).

I you buy an all-terrain tire it isnt going to clear mud well. The best overall tire I have ever seen was Goodyear MTR. It works well in Rocks, Roots, Mud and is very tough for a radial. It may however be a bit nosier than you prefer.

I have the Firestone Destination ATs, and love them. I have not tried them in mud. They are execellent in snow/ice/rain, and dry weather.

Goodyears MTR has a pretty poor reputation here in mud, just a bit better than most AT's. Rocks, sand, etc, totally different story, probably the best all round tyre currrently available with the best sidewall.

Cooper's ST self cleans pretty well when you get a bit of wheel spin going, probably the best AT tyre I've seen in mud, but they have had issues with sidewalls, delaminating treads and tread blocks tearing. The set we had also micro cracked the side walls when fitted. Not very reassuring. We've gone with BFG AT's since. Not as good in mud, about the same in the wet, and I think the ST was slightly better on gravel roads, although the other half hasn't noticed a difference. Better milage out of the BFG's too, which surprised me.

Cooper S/T not the STT (or is it SST)

Its an australian design(susposedly) and the tread works like
a jello mold to eject the mud.
