Been pondering and reading a lot the last few months, and am quietly confident that we aren't being visited (regularly), and that this is the modern manifestation of what's been going on forever, in stories and visitiations of the fey folk.

It seems that the same stories are applied over generations
* miraculous/spontaneous appearance and disappearance.
* Abduction
* Time/Memory Loss
* Translocation (coming too a long way from the start).
* Display of cutting edge technology.

It's the last one that drew my interest the most.

Pre-industrial revolution, magic was the "cutting edge" technology just beyond the normal person's reach.
Industrial revolution period, there were airship sightings
WWII it was foo fighters
Space age, it's UFOs.

Logically, if we are/have been visited, it should always have been UFOs...

Why in the 70s would abductees "be shown" room sized supercomputers, when in the very near future, your phone was capable of so much more...

Not saying any of this is real, happening, mass delusions...or even the collective consciousness helping us along our path to innovation and technology.

Just something that I've been pondering lately.

Mental illness affects about 18.5% of the US. Severe illness can account for 4.2% of the population.

There are a lot of stories. Very few hard facts.

Odd that many people now carry recording devices and the only uptick of evidence of anything is with police misconduct, rogue teachers and bad drivers. (and cat behavior)

Not sure where you're going with this, but I'd bet a beer that there are intelligent beings on other planets in our galaxy. Too many suitable stars and planetary systems for this not to be the case.
Could they have visited us?
Consider that they wouldn't have to have had civilizations much older than ours to have developed the capability. Think of where we'll be technically in a few hundred years.
We already know the theory. We just can't yet put it into practice.
Could all of these ancient myths have some grounding in reality?
Very possible.

Some people falsely think that the advances in computer technology must be due to alien techno. As someone who works in the industry and has been involved in the advancements this industry developed thanks to the extreme hard work by thousands upon thousands of researchers, companies, and universities. What from the outside probably looks like a miracle was in fact a lot of hard work by a lot of very smart persons. You can not imagine the complexity of design and engineering to make a computer chip but it doesn't mean it came from aliens.

The alien nonsense is being sold to the masses that is largely uneducated and not even interested in hearing the facts. Anybody with the basic understanding of probability will know that, although the size of the universe plays in favour of having other intelligent beings out there, the same size severely reduces the probability of said beings to discover each other and makes it even less probable to visit each other.

I always liked Arthur C Clarke's quote "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

The book "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" by Mark Twain (1889) was an interesting juxtaposition of time. "Hello-Central"

I do believe there's intelligent life out there, but likely living at a different point in their development time line. Visiting us? I believe not likely. If I were of such a race, I would be content to observe and not interfere. There would be nothing to gain by interaction and likely great trouble to be caused. [censored], we can't even play peacefully among ourselves.

Despite what we led to believe by movies and TV, alien sightings are world wide, in all cultures and economic zones...it isn't one fuitcake minority seeing this stuff. As far as them not being UFO's long ago, they could only put into words for their own experience - if you've only seen birds in the air, then they are pretty big birds, but still birds, not something made of metal with lights and stuff.

Just a beer? The numbers are a little tricky. There's about 100 billion stars out there in the galaxy, with maybe 10-40 billion earth like planets. The earth has been here for about 4.5 billion years. We're the first civilization on the planet. There may be other civilizations on other worlds, but the odds of them actually visiting us is something else. There are about 200 billion galaxies, out there, but if the speed of light is really the limit, they may just be too far away for them to visit.

I'm not going to call it one way or another, but here are some facts:

1. NORAD records thousands of level and ascending flights of unidentified flying objects every year. (Public info, no conspiracy involved)

2. The Air Force encourages the public to report UFO sightings. Especially as they have many documented events of attempting to chase these things, and failing in the process. (Public info, no conspiracy involved)

3. Some of the unidentified objects tracked by NORAD and the FAA have impacted and caused damage to commercial jets in level flight. (Public and well documented info, no conspiracy involved)

4. Many persons who have claimed to encounter a UFO have been left horrifically burned by radiation of no possible natural or artificial source. (Public info documented by law enforcement, public hospitals, Air Force, FBI, other various government agencies)

Aliens? Maybe and maybe not. Enemy aircraft from another nation here on Earth? Maybe, maybe not. Domestic assaults or accidents carried out by our own government? Maybe, maybe not.

But there is definitely a lot more going on than just a bunch of wackadoos. Plenty of incidents with loads of physical evidence that the government has zero explanation for.

I hope you're right that it's just some people. I don't see how people can even believe the notion that advances in computer technology must be due to alien technology.

They would only have to look at Dijkstra's publications that have been around the 70s to realize their beliefs are silly:
E.W. Dijkstra :
On-the-fly garbage collection: an exercise in cooperation,
A class of allocation strategies inducing bounded delays only,
Guarded commands, non-determinacy and a calculus for the derivation of programs

We're being lied to about lots of things.

Too many retired Air Force personnel are coming forward to discuss UFO's at and shutting down Nuke sites and things like Rendelshem forest incident. Airline pilots come forward like the Japanese guy in the 747.guys with everything to lose and nothing to gain by talking.

Just because its unidentified does not mean its alien, and almost everything is explainable except for when it isn't - like when you see something that defies the laws of physics.

Ive seen UFO's with my own eyes and with groups of people that don't operate under newtonian principles as we know them.

We can't make aerial devices that accelerate from a dead stop to out of your site on the horizon in 1/10 of a second, or things that make 90 degree turns at thousands of miles an hour.

BlueBook was developed as a part of the SR71 programme to gain information as to what people were actually seeing.

Curve was pretty interesting until we forgot how to make stuff faster..LOL

although mach 9.6 in the X43-A in 2004 is on the curve.

We are not the only monkeys with 1/2 a brain in this Universe. I'm sure there are way older and therefore way more advanced civilizations in the Universe than the ones on this rock. Pretty ironic to think we are the only planet with intelligent life. If we monkeys can go into space and to the moon in a sliver of technological time (60 years), what could a civilization that's been "technologically intelligent" for a 1000+ years do?

Which makes sense until you come sidereal the fact that FEMA very recently developed a protocol for dealing with a crashed alien space ship, and a close encounter.

Hard to blame that on the X-Planes.

Havn't told my UFO story for a while, so here it is.

In the summer of 1974, while working at a ”secret weapons testing facility” on the Maplin Sands in the Thames Estuary, I and the other members of my EOD team witnessed a UFO manifestation.

An oblate silver spheroid, with a slight bulge in the middle, and a sharp midline projection, materialised above us in the blue sky, reflecting the light of the low evening sun. It was joined by another, then another, in a linear formation.

No one said anything for a few seconds, then I, rather hesitantly, said "Er...are you seeing that too?"

"Er...Yeees. What the [censored] is it?”

“Dunno, but if you asked me to draw Flying Saucers, that’s what I’d draw.”

They hung there, apparently roughly over the indistinct tideline about a kilometer south. Mirages weren’t uncommon on the sands but not up in the sky, or at this time of day.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit that, in the worst ‘50’s B-movie (look it up kids) tradition I half-considered our “tactical” situation. We were a long way out, the land a just perceptible green fuzz on the horizon behind us, the sands absolutely flat and featureless, no cover anywhere apart from our 4-tonner and a slight blemish to the SE which I’d been told was the hulk of the last TSR2 (look it up kids) doing target duty.

There was a radio in the 4-tonner. Should we report this?

What was the format? “First Contact, Wait Out”?

We stood looking at them. Were they looking at us?

We didn’t know for maybe about a minute, then the light glinted off the wings of an aircraft far over stage left, and very high. The silver spheroids were nucleation sites in a vapour-trail (contrail) that was just on the point of formation. As we watched they started to elongate, then joined up, and became recognisably familiar.

Those initial spheroids did not, however, remind me (or anyone else there) of contrails at all. Photography was, unfortunately, not permitted in the test area, for security reasons. (The weapons tested were more likely to originate from Vickers than Venus, AFAIK the UK MOD doesn’t have an “Area 21”)

If I’d had a camera, and just got a couple of still pictures of the beginning of the manifestation, by chance, I think its quite likely that I would never have worked out what they were, though an “expert”, if unbiased by wishful thinking, might get it straight away.

I would also have guessed “my” spheroids were much closer and lower than they were, until the B52 or whatever it was, gave them a stratospheric context.

I'm not saying all UFO's are contrails. I'm saying that familiar things can look strange and unfamiliar until you are given a context to interpret them in, and once you go for the “Flying Saucer” explanation (which “UFO” is, in common parlance, a synonym for even though that is not what it means) it can be hard to shake.

I don't rule anything out absolutely, but these discussions often go:-

"What's that?"

"Don't know"

"Let's talk about alien visitations"

and the third step is illogical, Captain in relation to the second step.

Add the charlatans ready to take your ca$h for their books, presentations, radio shows, etc...

That being said, I think it's possible that extraterrestrials have been here...

We will give the human race a "generous" 2 million year presence on earth; This is 1/2300th the age of the earth (4.6billion years) and 1/7000th the age of the universe. I'm thinking a possibility of any other trajectory that leads toward a civilization easily getting a "million year" head start (assuming all other things being equal) is very high. So a 1000 year 'technology intelligent' civilization could have developed "1 million years" before ours..... That's a 1 million one thousand year intelligent civilization using us as a benchmark.

Well there's the question of how long does a civilization actually last before it falls? We went to the moon in 1969, haven't been back since '72. How much does it take to launch an intersteller mission? At our fastest speed, the fastest rocket has only been a couple thousandths the speed of light and the closest star system is 4 light years away. At current speeds, that would take around 16,000 years on a one way trip. In theory there are crafts designs that could hit 10-30% light speed, but that's still a long way. Plus what do you do when you get there? Do you hang around for a few million years waiting for life to spring up?

That's where 1000s of years of technological intelligence growth comes into play. Still many technicality secrets to be discovered IMO.
