Air conditioning evaporator location

does anyone know the location of the evaporator coil vs the heater core in Toyotas? Specifically my 2002 Hi-Lux 4x4 4door Pickup. It cools so well (easily maintains 21C - 70F in 48+ C - 118+ F) that with our humidity it freezes solid and I have to turn it off. If I catch it in time I can hit the blower hard for a while (lot of noise and a shower of snow in the cabin). If the heater coil came before the evaporator I could try a blast of hot air. it takes about an hour or two to freeze up, so it's not easy to experiment with, but when it's that hot and muggy out, the last thing I want to do is fill the cabin with wet air. As it is I have to keep it on recirculate to avoid outside air, which is still probably 20% or more.

The evap coil freezeing up is an indication of low freon charge. Have you had that checked? Also have your evap coil drain checked for blockage.

I think that your expansion valve is stuck which allows too much refrigerant to flow which will make the evap freeze.

Does your compressor cycle on and off? If it doesn't this will also cause the evap to freeze.

Do you still have warranty on the truck. There's no way it should be doing that. Usually there is a probe in the evaporator that senses freeze up and cycles the compressor - maybe it's malfunctioning. As for the compressor cycling, in my case (a 1992 Maxima) the compressor always runs and the expansion valve somehow handles the freeze up protection. However, I think that's an older design, and most newer cars have the cycling compressor. There's tons of information at www.aircondition.com Try posting there.
