Not talking about on defrost, but I had the setting on "Vent" which is only out the dashboard vents, and the air conditioner compressor was cycling. This is the 2001 Ranger.

See if it still does it on any other settings, like floor only etc.
I know on my Honda the programming is weird for the HVAC. if I put it on dash vents only after previously using a defrost setting (either full defrost or blend) it keeps cycling the compressor. I have to put it on floor for a second, then switch to dash, for the compressor to stop. A bit odd but not a big enough deal that I care.
Just food for thought.

I'll have to check that out. I know when I turned the selector to OFF it did not cycle, but didn't try floor and other settings. It may be that after the air has been running it will still do the compressor to dry out the ducting so it does not get odors.
There is one wire behind the hvac you can put a switch on to make it manual. ie vent+floor = no ac
I believe its purple but thats been 8 years for me.
I just made an AC button.
My subaru on the other hand does the auto ac with the defrost settings but nothing else unless you have the AC button on.

I may go there, but for now am mostly interested in whether it is normal and if so, why did the engineers decide that is needed to run apart from AC and defrost.
Compressor runs on all settings except vent only and floor only. I must have had it on vent-floor combined the other day, and that one does run the compressor.

Yep, if you had it floor/vent mode it would be perfectly normal for the compressor to cycle on that vehicle. My '97 Explorer is identical in that setup. No compressor on floor only or vent only, but it runs on everything else.
Actually, the AC is off in 3 positions - Vent, Floor, and OFF.
I am going to put a bypass for the floor/vent mode in mine some day.

I looked in my owner's manual and it says the AC compressor can run in any position but vent or floor (and off is implied). Now it works out that having the air run in the floor-vent combo is a good thing for me. Position 2 (out of 4) is broken on my fan switch so I get output like this: 1,1,3,4. Now 3 is just too much cold air and 1 is too little, but I discovered by moving it to floor-vent, the vent actually puts out about like it would on the 2 setting. Problem solved.

Sometimes it isn't the fan switch that causes certain motor speeds not to work, often the blower motor resistor stops working properly.

if the switch isnt physically broken.. its the resister pack under the hood.. really easy fix.
for the hvac wire.. its a purple wire behind the hvac controls.
when interrupted the compressor wont run.. ie makes it like off floor, vent.. in all positions.

Definitely the resistor.
The blower motor resistor is about $20 if I remember correctly from the Ford dealer.
You need to remove the blower motor to get to it. Moving the coolant/washer reservoirs out of the way will help. You have to take out maybe 7 bolts total, so not a huge job. If the bolts are not rusty it's a 20 minute fix easily.
The compressor operation sounds completely normal though. I think it's a good thing overall...keeps it lubricated since most people probably leave it on a/c or vent/floor.
Just looked the part up on fordparts.com. The part # you need is 19A706. The retail price has gone up to $35.26.

Good info. Thanks. I printed it out hoping to get around to it sometime soon. First I wanted to put in a real oil pressure gauge though.
