Inspection time and we have the exhaust stacks and shrouds off giving a good look at the carb, intake, alternate air intake and oil cooler. The intake tubes run through the oil pan heating them and the carb for some prevention of intake ice, and also for packaging.

Lycoming O-540, 540ci horizontally opposed, air and oil cooled 6 cyl, 235hp in this configuration w/ a constant speed prop controlled using the engine's pressurized oil supply. She has ~150hrs since overhaul.

Though some would find this interesting. For the important stuff here; Phillips XC 20w-50 and Tempest (small internal magnet) (or Champion) oil filters.

Not sure if you know, but in case not, it's a joke. Miata's are such a frequently engine-swapped vehicle that it's now become a joke anytime someone sees an engine bigger than what came stock in the Miata.

A good part of my flying days are spent behind a Lycoming engine from the O 235 to the IO 540. Historically if properly maintained a Lycoming engine will go to TBO and beyond without any major issues which is more than be said about Continentals which can have cylinder problems after 7 or 800 hours of operation.

Most of not all mainstream current aircraft engines are very reliable, but each do have their relative shortcomings; Lycoming camshafts, Conti's do seem to have cylinder issues esp the high performance ones, but all still reliable. I'd say, the biggest issues w/ powerplant reliability arise from operator care, the quality of rebuilds and some replacement components as opposed to any inherent design weaknesses.

The Lycoming IO360 (A1B6) (angle valve, 200 HP hahahaha, they lie.. ) in my Cardinal RG. It's been quite reliable over the last 13 years.

I did it. It's been running wonderfully for the last 13 years.
