Advice on hour meter setups.

I want to put hour meters on my new Stihl 4 mix trimmer, and on my Honda gx35 equipped tiller. These engines require valve adjustments every so many hours, which I know i can easily estimate, but I like tracking use of things and I have a 15 year old karcher pressure washer with a honda engine that is on its 3rd pump, and I often wonder how many hours the engine has on it.

So I know it may be a waste of money, but I want to do it anyway. I have seen a weed trimmer equipped with a motometer here, but I cannot find the post that had the picture.

Any tips, or advice? Any pics to give me ideas how to mount it?

I have 1 MOTO METER,and 2 hardline meters. I bought the hardline meters because they indicated they were engineered and assembled in the USA, But on recipt the actual meter indicated it was made overseas. I tried.

I've got two trimmers with hour meters on them right now. It's pretty straightforward. You just find a spot that's fairly flat, you just stick the hour meter on there with velcro, then route the wire through the shroud and wrap it several times around the spark plug. Cut off the excess length wire and you're good to go.

I read your other post and I see where you have one of the new 4-mix engines in your FS91R. I don't know if your Stihl dealer told you but the machine has a diagnostic port that the dealer can read and it will tell them how many hours you have on your trimmer, among other things.

My dealer did not tell me that, but when I took the shrouding off I seen that connector and wondered if that was what it was for. I knew that the new saws with the compensating carburetor had the ability to track all that, I did not know that the regular 4 mix did as well.

I would love to access that info myself....

Thanks for the replies. I got the Motometer installed, My Machine had handlebars so I mounted the meter on there so I have Tach to look at while I am trimming. I know its kind of silly, but it makes me feel like im really doing something....lol

So far the Motometer seems to work great. I assume that even if the battery goes dead that the total hours are kept in memory?

I would love to have the MDG-1 module but it costs nearly a grand and I don't think your Stihl dealer would sell it to you. They shouldn't charge much if anything at all to do a diagnostic reading for you.

I like how you have that tach on the handlebars so you can see the RPM in real time. I never would have thought of that. And yes if you replace the battery or if it falls out etc it will still remember the hours that had already accumulated.

FYI your throttle grip is on there backwards.

Thank you! Due to the poor weather we have had it only has about 5 minutes of run time on it cutting anything. I thought it felt a little different using your thumb for the throttle.... But it never really dawned on me it was backwards.

It kind of makes me wonder about our local dealer since I assume they were the ones who assembled it. I will fix that and see how I like it installed the correct way. Lol.

It still has the fuel mix in it the dealer put in it, I sure hope they can mix the oil in the fuel better than they installed the throttle grip...

You are welcome. If it makes you feel any better my Stihl dealer fills every machine with Motomix or VP SEF on equipment when purchsed. Yours may mix oil and gas so if you have and doubts dump it in a mower or something.
