I will be changing the oil in my daughter's 2000 GMC Jimmy this weekend. She doesn't live close by so this my first oil change for her. Vehicle has 100K and has been serviced about every 3k (she claims) by a (shudder) 'quick lube' outfit near her home using dino. With a New England winter around the corner and the fact that this vehicle isn't garaged, I will be using a syn. Castrol Edge 5W-20 with a PureOne filter. Finally to my question ... with her mostly in-town driving schlepping the kids around, what should I advise her for her next change? 5K, 7.5K?

After 100k of dino there is bound to be a little sludge formation in that engine, so I'd keep the first OCI to 4k. You might even consider using a syn that is supposed to clean better than others, maybe PP since it's still on sale for $1 a quart with the rebate.
Why are you using 5W-20? I'm pretty sure that engine calls for a 30 weight.

You can always put a couple drops off the dipstick on a file card after 5000 miles and let it soak in. If there is not harsh ring of debris and it looks relatively clean, keep running it.

I haven't seen Edge in 5W20 around here yet. Only 5 and 10 W30. I think I would do a used oil analysis to see how that engine likes a 20 weight before using it long term and seeing as how you don't live close by to check. I do think it would be OK for winter though, however, if you used 5W30, you probably wouldn't need to change it for a year. Just top up if it needs it.
Personally, I use syn in the winter for exteneded drains over cold flow properties. I do not have a garage and dislike laying in slushy doo dee to change oil.
Besides, 5w30 conventional does very well in our area.
I just changed my Mom's '08 Cobalt to QS-Torquepower 5W30 and won't worry about it until Spring (7500-8000 miles). She still works and does a decent amount of highway (even at 70 yrs old!). I used Pennzoil Platinum 5W20 in my F150 and won't change it until April or May (again, around 7500-8000 miles). My wife's Malibu Maxx gets plain old Quaker State green bottle 5W30. She drives mostly around town and it should be good until at least March/April (5000-6000 miles).
At any rate, getting back to your post (I can just ramble!). Your daughter would be fine to 5000 miles on any quality 5w30 conventional. With Castrol Edge, you could easily extend a LOT longer. I would go at least 8000 miles on Edge.

hate2work - There is NOT bound to be sludge in an engine that used only dino , esp at 3,000 mile OCIs.
