MIL wants to sell FIL's 2004 Sierra 1500 4x4, mainly because he's got some health issues and isn't driving anymore. It spends time in their garage with the battery running down, though they did have the mouse-eaten fusebox replaced which took care of the electrical problems. I drove it for a week last fall, it's a nice truck. Any words of wisdom helping them sell it? Figured I'll try Craigslist or FB Marketplace.

High quality pics and clear accurate verbiage are key to getting a good buyer.
Nothing is more irritating to a buyer than crappy photos and vague descriptions.

You're always gonna get a few virtual tire-kickers and low-ballers; they just can't help themselves.

Yes FB or Craigslist, but both are the sewer. Just ignore anyone that sounds suspect, or starts making offers sight unseen, or even has the slightest hint of problem. You set the time and place to see it. If there a real buyer they will work it out - within reason.

How small a town you live? Is there still a cafe everyone goes to - sometimes they have a bulletin board that allows postings. Or just ask around - work, church, whatever. A good used older 4x4 should be easy to sell.

Both work however it’s work dealing with FB marketplace or Craigslist people making low offers and asking obvious questions answered hopefully in your clear AD.

I had something for sale on FB marketplace-just yesterday. I had 23 "Is it still available?" inquires. One showed up to buy it.
Maybe each local area is different-I will never-ever sell something on FB Marketplace again.

I sell a lot of things on Marketplace. The "is it still available" auto-replies I just delete. My feeling is that if they want it bad enough they will write an actual reply. It's annoying, but Marketplace has the most traffic over any of the other platforms.

Brace yourself, FB MP is a zoo.

As stated, you set the terms and disregard anyone who seems the least bit flakey.

My goal is to speak with them on the phone if they seem legit. You can tell a lot from a phone conversation. I don't understand the fear of giving out your number -- not sure what anyone is going to do with it?

Put in your ad that it's still available if the ad is up. That will filter 95% of people because 95% of people can't read. This will also cause you to lose faith in humanity -- it's astounding how stupid we are. On the flip side, take the ad down the second you sell it. There is also an option to mark it as PENDING if you're working with a potentially promising buyer. I appreciate it when people use the PENDING option

Pawn it off on a family member? for peanuts (or actual value)? Less work and may make for good family relations.

How are the power windows? Any issue with the dash cluster?
If clean, they typically sell in short order -- at least in the midwest.

Thanks all, the truck is in decent shape, 170,000 miles and extended cab. Talked with MIL, Carvana is interested in it and she's happy with the price they are offering. Saves all of us the legwork, and she's more interested in getting rid of it than getting top $ for it. Had to pull it out of their garage again because of the dead battery, so I've got the battery recharging at the moment. Sounds like she just wants to clean their things out of it, make sure it runs, and hand them the keys.
