Hard to find parts in northern NY at a good price? Try Plattsburgh Motor Service on Bridge St. downtown. They always have or can get us the parts we need. Very good to work with.

I've been to the US hundreds of times, don't tell them its Canadian; it works fine.

Except when ordering online you typically need a "billing address" so they know it's from Canada. Still doesn't make sense though. They still get paid when you use a credit card no matter where you live.

It's not uncommon for stores to have a different price online than in the store. However, most stores that I've been to will honor the online price if you mention it and they are able to verify it.

Exactly. its online ordering that is the problem. all stores accept it locally.

Secondly I am surprised they dont price match,In this day of O'Reilly,Bond and most everyone else trying to make the sale and take it away from the other chain down the street, not even attempting to "Price match guarantee" is almost a death sentence.Of course, everybody likes to use the internet now to shake down brick and mortar stores for big discounts, not realizing they sometimes pay shipping (like Rockauto),and may have a devil of a time with warrantees.Plus you are going to wait for it.Never seen a case where one clicks "BUY IT NOW" online, and 30 seconds later Fed Ex has it on the doorstoop.

what do you mean about the price Match Guarantee part?

Go to another AAP if possible.

I've found it all depends on who is behind the counter. They can be super friendly and willing to help at one store and uncooperative as heck at another.

However, still a huge improvement of the mom and pop places that use to make up a good portion of the auto parts biz.

+1 to above

Here in the Heartland they are super friendly, as they have competition from everyone.

I've seen it go the other way however. I recently was looking at some really nice insulated, waterproof hunting/ice fishing/snowmobiling boots at Cabelas. Their "online price" was $189. I was leery of ordering online without trying them on beforehand, so I went in to the store expecting to see a higher price (probably high enough I'd even consider buying a cheaper model instead). I was surprised to see the in-store price was only $179. Even better, though - it was on sale for $134. Sold!

You could potentially buy a "Green dot" prepaid MC stateside at a drugstore and charge it up with cash, then shop with it across country lines.

Or get a netbook computer and buy your stuff online within the States so you get a US IP address.

Sorry it's such a hassle, they probably don't want a customs/ VAT tax hassle etc.

So alright I will go into the store and get them. My frustration: brake pads list price online:62.99. Promo on the site was spend 50 and up and get 20% off your purchase plus a 25$ off coupon off my next 50$ purchase. So in essence the pads would be 50$ before tax on that promotion. Now full price on website 62.99, so whatever I will go in the store andpay full price 62.99 for them and just live with not getting the promo. Get to the store and guess what? The store list price is 71.99??!!!? So I politely asked if they could at least match the online list price of 62.99, but nope they flat out refuse to match it so I left with nothing. So 50$ for everyone local, and i get to pay 22$ more for the same pads? I find that is not a great way to run a business. Just my personal opinion. I complained on their facebook site and all i get was sorry we dont accept canadian credit cards. I thought the whole point of credit cards is that they are accepted worldwide? Besides that paypal converts cdn money to us dollars..so why not accept that? personally i would do alot of business with them if they accepted our money, and besides they would make more money. Subsequent asks as to why they cant even match online reg price have gone unanswered. I have decided that I am no longer doing business with Advance. Its disappointing. Being able to look at their site and expect the same prices in store shouldnt be too much to ask...

rant over

I don't blame this on the parts counter person, he/she just follows company directive. May be the store manager can override the price for walk in customers.

I agree, but should i really have to beg for a store mgr to price match their own site??!!

Alot of you are not understanding what i wrote. my credit card works in store. its when making payment online through their site for store pickup that they dont take canadian billing info.

I understood the problems you had with AAP online, that has nothing with personal service you received at B&M store. Most counter person just do exactly what was told, if they do anything else they may get fired.

This story may not be the exact same thing, but it is close: I got an email from O'Reilly for a coupon to but something for $0.99 with regular price of $4.99. I went to a local store with the printed coupon, the counter person could not enter that part for 99 cents, the computer showed $4.99. He first told me that the part was $4.99 plus tax and coupon was invalid, I asked him to get the manager to override the computer so that I would paid 99 cents plus tax.

He finally went to back room to get the manager and everything solved, I got my part for 99 cents and he didn't into trouble.

I don't expect much from part counter person, anything that is not to my satisfaction is usually up from corporate level, their policy is usually the root of the problem.

It's actually quite common for stores to advertise a different price online than in the store. Northern Tool is a place I've had it happen several times. Whenever I buy something there, I pull the item up on my phone and check the price on their website. If the online price is lower, they have no problem giving me the lower price. Also had it happen at Best Buy, they will usually honor the price unless it's advertised as an "online only" price.

I don't think you ever mentioned WHICH credit card you have...it is a major name isn't it... MC, VISA, AMEX, DISC? If it is you should call them and ask them about why your card is not accepted at the business on line.

Its a VISA card. havent thought of calling but since they dont accept canadian billing info online and their response was we dont accept it, i took it as they cant take it. Im considering writing a complaint to their head office..but it will probably get looked at by some front line level reps and end up getting the same result and same waste of time.

its as if i have to fight to be able to buy from their site. they should make it easy. i mean a large part of the population lives close to the border so why not make it easier to earn more business? Maybe they make enough money and dont need any more?

^ I'm pretty sure they don't want the VAT hassles or maybe Canadian recall law says if they sell a part to a Canadian and it fails they're civilly liable etc. Surely they want your business but they can't offer advise how to achieve it. Maybe a friendly manager (not at the store you visited) can tell you how to make it happen "off the record".

If I buy something from walmart online using a Maine billing address and pick it up in New Hampshire I have to pay ME sales tax. If I buy it in person in NH I do not have to pay the tax (on the spot-- honor system later.) There is something screwy their lawyers have unearthed, causing that policy.

I repeat, get a green dot prepaid mastercard or do that thing with Amex and a friends address in the US.
