additives to diesel fuel???

I know this isn't the place for additive talk but since it was diesel related I thought what the heck. I have been using a mixture of poer service gray and mmo in my 2003 dodge cummins for a while now. The stuff seems to give me 1 to 2mpg improvement. The truck runs really smooth and performs well on this setup. It is not too expensive to use but I have read about using the 2 stroke oil as an additive instead. Please enlighten me to what benifits you get from the 2 stroke oil? What kind of oil? Some are synthetic and very expensive. How much do you add per gallon or tankfull of fuel.
 
I wouldn't use anything in the fuel of that engine that would leave an ash when burned. Although it does have some affect, I'm not a big fan of MMO in these newer engines. I prefer to use an additive designed for diesel fuel, Stanydne or SoySheild. I have been using Stanydne for quite a while with good results. See the two or three previous threads of ULSD for more discusion of additives.

If you were going to use 2 stroke oil, something like 1-3oz per gallon is enough I would think.
 
The theory behind 2 stroke oil is lubricity and low-ash. While it should certainly perform this task fine, it will add little in terms of cetane boost, cleanliness, and water control. I would add it at a rate of say 1:100 or 1:50 at most for lubricity. If 2 stroke oil can adequately lubricate an engine running at high rpms, it certainly can add some much needed lubricity for our diesel fuel systems. However I feel there are better choices that add more benefits while still having those that 2 stroke oil provides. Any good diesel additive like PS Diesel Kleen, Cen-Pe-Co, Schaeffer's, Amsoil, Stanadyne, Howes, etc. will not only lubricate, but add cetane, clean, start easier, control water and algae to some extent, and improve combustion. I have a 2004.5 Dodge w/ Cummins but am currently experimenting with several adds in my wife's 01 Jetta TDI. I have been using Cen-Pe-Co Diesel Klenz at the maintenance rate of 5 oz., and also combining the Diesel Klenz with about 6 oz. of Neutra per tank. I have not seen much economy increase with the mixture, but there is definitely an increase with one or the other alone. I got a quart of Lucas UCL tonight and am going to throw that in the mix with the Cen-Pe-Co and Neutra at recommended rates and see what happens. I am not going to put all 3 together, I will try Lucas with each of the other two.

There is ample evidence that suggests that the typical diesel fuel adds such as Howes, Power Service, etc. that have that distictive smell will lead to increased wear metals during the course of an oil change interval. This is exacerbated during cold weather as more fuel slips by the rings and ends up in the oil. Thus the reason I am experimenting with 2 proven non-wear metal increasers in Neutra and Lucas to see if I can duplicate the mileage impact I have seen with the "stinky" adds. I have been recording the data, I believe it will be good data since nearly all her miles are similar in nature and she always fills up at the same place. She has new tires, an alignment, new air filter, fuel filter, etc. to throw some of those things out. I will start a post once I can draw some conclusions that hopefully can help some people out on this stuff. Best of luck, and try to stay away from overdosing on "stinky" adds as that definitely seems to be the recipe for increased wear metals.
 
There are no benefits to using 2-stroke oil mixed into diesel fuel. The reason for suggesting it is that it is probably the least harmful home-brew for guys that just gotta do something.... Real lubricity improvers are work under the very high pressure in the injection system while very dilute oil won't do much good.

Buy a real diesel fuel additive that contains a lubricitiy additive if you feel the need. There are several good ones. FP60 is excellent, as are the Schaeffer products and several others.

Try any additive for at least 3 tankfuls of fuel on repeatable runs. Stick with the one that more than pays for itself in fuel savings and makes your engine run better.

What I can't find anyone to comment on is- Are the increased wear metals relevant. Is there enough metal removed from bearings to make a difference in the longevity of the engine. Are the small amounts showing up in the oil insignificant or are we really losing significant amounts of bearings? I have high lead when I run Powerservice Diesel Kleen and can't decide whether to quit using it or not. Will my motor go 300,000 miles without it and only 299,900 with it? I can tell it runs better with an additive but if it significantly shortens motor life maybe it isn't worth it.
 
The question is really weather the metals are wear metals from the engine, so components in the fuel additive that are in the oil as blow-by. A VOA of the additive would probably be helpful. I see no increase in wear metals using Stanadyne or SoySheild in any used oil analysis I've done. However, I'm only interested in adding lubricity. I only use lube adds, not any centane improvers, etc. which may be the difference.
 
Shouldn't a guy be concerned if fuel additive residue is showing up in used oil analysis? What does that say about the fuel injection system (e.g. slobbering) or the condition of the rings (too much blowby). Or maybe it says something about the amount of additive being used or the additive itself. Doesn't sound right to me. I agree with the sentiment above: Use a fuel additive designed for diesels that leaves no combustion chamber residue.
