I am helping a friend swap out a tranny in his 03 lincoln aviator. We have the old one out and will get the new one in today or tomorrow, but then it will need new ATF fluid. Which is looking like it's next to impossible without many dollars of special tools. It has a small torx screw in the drain plug that you have to remove and then thread an adaptor into it. Then you need a pressurized cup full of atf and pump it in until it runs back out. The mityvac ATF filler is 250 bucks, not really cost effective for me to buy right now. I usually love an excuse to buy a new tool but 250 bucks for something I will only use once, this is the first and only trans I have seen that needs this-I'm sure I will see more in the future but that's a lot of money to help a friend out, just bought a trans jack to do the job. http://www.tooltopia.com/mityvac-mv6410.aspx.

So has anyone done this in a DIY way before? I wouldn't mind buying the filling adaptor if I can find it locally, http://www.tooltopia.com/otc-tools-6604.aspx. Anyone know if auto parts stores sell these things?

My options right now are a suction gun, not sre if the hose will fit in the little fill hole or not. http://www.tooltopia.com/lincoln-lubrication-615.aspx

Or I was thinking about trying to make a filler out of a garden sprayer, like some have done to make a motive style pressure brake bleeder. Anyone done something similar to this? If so an pictures or advice would be very much appreciated!

I am open to any and all suggestions you might have on how I might be able to fill this trans without spending 300 dollars on tools!

Thanks, Scott

I have seen the fill adaptor for sale on ebay for a few dollars. You can use a suction pump to fill it from harbor frieght around $10.

That is some good advice there! As long as I can get enough in that the fluid lost out the cooling lines is replaced also. I will probably try this and hope it works and if not have to start looking for a filler.

Thank You!!!

UPDATE

I got everything done today. To fill it I used a little pump that screws onto the tranny fluid bottles and has a hose. I bought a brass pipe fitting from the hardware store that was 1/8" pipe threads by 3/8" barbed fitting that screwed into the torx set screw hole in the drain bolt and connected the pump hose to the barbs. Worked great! Followed the factory manual instructions and had it filled in no time at all.

Thanks for the help.
