ADBV/Bypass?

Just how does the ADBV work? Does it "open" under pressure and close when the engine is off?
What about the bypass valve? How do I know if my filter is "bypass" equipped? I run a Wix 51085.

The ADBV is essentially a circular flapper valve. Yes, pressure/flow opens it. The lack of flow/pressure ..and the attempted reversing of the "oil column" closes it. It's not required to be a perfect seal. It's allowed to drain back ...but allegedly has some unpublished time requirement before allowing the volume of the filter to leak through
