Acura NSX prototype will drive Mid-Ohio prior to IndyCar race
By: Autoweek staff on 7/25/2013

Acura's new, long-awaited NSX is still two years from arriving in customers' impatient hands, but attend the Izod IndyCar Series race at Mid-Ohio on Aug. 4 and you'll have the opportunity to see and hear the car in action. Acura on Thursday released an image of a prototype NSX, and said the car will take to the racetrack just prior to the Honda Indy 200 in Lexington, Ohio.

Mid-Ohio is a logical venue to show off the NSX, as global development of the car, slated for launch in 2015, is being led by engineers at Honda R&D Americas in Raymond, Ohio. Additionally, Acura in May announced that the NSX will be produced at the newly established Performance Manufacturing Center in nearby Marysville, Ohio. And, of course, Honda is a longtime IndyCar engine supplier.

The prototype that will tackle Mid-Ohio maintains the styling and proportions of the NSX Concept that debuted at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, while packaging the production vehicle's mid-mounted V6 engine mated to Acura's new three-motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system.

Just an FYI if you want to see the new NSX....

Was so stoked about the NSX, concept had an F1 V10 boasting all the power and RPM. Sadly, the concept drivetrain was all bait! Thing's going to end up with some V6 with a really stupid name.

Very Audi-esque. Needs a monster of a powerplant to draw the attention it deserves. Styling is as expected of today's angular, over-vented, high beltline sportscars.

You should still be stoked. This V6 will be a twin turbo unit with a generator keeping at least one of the turbos spooled at all times for zero-lag power delivery, there will be a DCT with an electric motor integrated which will aid at low speed/low RPM so they can use DI and still have a high redline, powerful hub motors on each front wheel will provide AWD with unmatched control due to their ability to apply negative torque in corners, look for the whole thing to put out around 525HP, and introduce some new materials and manufacturing techniques to keep the weight in check. This is going to be a great car!

BTW I believe the proto here is a HPD GT3/GTE mule and not the production version. They are expected to have it racing before the public can buy it.

A little tongue-in-cheek on that last post hoping it would spur more info

Thanks!

I am secretly excited to see what Honda does to make it stand out. Carbon fibre instead of aluminum?
Design-wise, it has largely the same profile as the previous NSX, with the current "Chevron robot smile" design feature. 'F1 inspired engine' series suggests perhaps the V10 with either four or two cylinders chopped off depending on V6/V8 options. I'd like to see them get that F1-tuned engine into production, that'll run on pump gas and not self-destruct in gridlock traffic. Realistically, surely the tuning will suffer in some way compared to the race engines. The next gen RX7 was supposed to have an electric turbo, but plans have changed so much on that thing also.

Sage marketing strategy. Race it, slap on their clearly bootlegged Skyactiv copy "EarthDreams", build-up some rep, buy time to develop, beta test it on track, detune, detune, detune, and then build it for production at a very high price point to maintain exclusivity. *sigh Surprise us, Honda!

No matter how 'balanced' and supposedly neutral handling the old one was, I still could not STAND the way it looked, so this one is about as ***** as a so called 'supercar' can get (save for the poster boyz' poster car, the Veyron.

Technically, yes, it does look interesting, but will the performance match the price, and will it be a dead feeling technonannymobile, like the other import fanboyzz' fave, the current GTR??

Sad they share the NSX name. The old was an amazingly perfect simple car. And also beyond reliable as a friend owns one. A few issues($2k trans issue) but for a 17 year old car as reliable as a V6 Accord if not more.

Not a fan but would love one day to own a first gen NSX.

Since NSX is short for New Sportscar eXperimental the name seems fitting.
