Acer Netbook

Am going on a long vacation soon and am thinking of buying an Acer Aspire One 10.1" Netbook AO532h-2588 and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it?

Plan on Running Ubuntu Linux on it in a dual boot mode.

I have a 15.6 inch Laptop but thought that this would meet my travel needs better.

Stay away from ACER...

Their stuff is not well built. Get an Asus or some other brand.

I had 2 notebooks fall apart from them just after the warranty.

I have an ASUS EEE PC that came with 1GB memory and 160GB hard drive. Works great, upgraded to max 2GB memory in the last month and am happy so far. I have the "old" Celeron 900Mhz processor because it clocks the same speed as the Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor that is in most of the netbooks around these days....and it was a bit cheaper. Runs Windows XP fine, so Ubuntu should be fine. Battery life is insane...like 5-7 hours. The only thing that would be improved upon is HD video processing, but if you get rid of the internal wireless internet card and replace it with a 200-pin video card, and just plug in a USB wireless internet dongle thingy.

I think I paid $195 + tax at Best Buy during a sale last year. Use mine for work, monitoring and adjusting HVAC systems, door lock / security monitoring, and other building systems. Much easier to haul up into a mechanical mezzanine than a 17" laptop, and you can use it to tune car stuff also.

Had my AcerOne for almost a year--love it. I picked up a Samsung external dual layer DVD burner for $50 to go with it. Works great and much lighter than my 17" Dell laptop. I am running Win XP, but I did delete a lot of Acer-installed fluff first.

My web access tool of choice is a HP Mini110 netbook running Ubuntu 10.4. I'm running the desktop version rather than the netbook remix they have because I'm kinda weird like that - like a busy look rather than minimal and simple.

1.5Ghz hyperthreading processor, 1 gig of ram, 16Gig solid-state hard drive. Quick, quiet, totally not challanged by anything I throw at it. It came with XP which is a fine OS for its age. It was sluggish on the netbook. Removing fluff probably would have done the trick but I just installed Ubuntu right over it.

Don't bother with a dual boot. I don't see what that would get you on a netbook. Even if you are doing some work/documents on the netbook, I've had no problems switching documents between OpenOffice and Word/Excel/PP.

Last year I bought my wife a Acer netbook and she still loves it. Here is that thread.

She has not had a single problem with it. This fathers day I got an Acer netbook for $199. Put in a 2 gig stick and bought a 6 cell battery and I've noticed a few differences between hers and mine.

Mine is thinner and has much less volume on the speakers. Both have the same processor but hers does last maybe a hour longer. Could be that her battery is older and mine needs more use.

Hers has been all over the place, left in hot cars, cold cars and still never a problem.

I'm impressed with them. I do wish mine had more volume. Its the only thing I can complain about.

Well the wifes has been working fine for over a year. Mine has a lower volume due to smaller speakers because its much thinner.

I'm not concerned with its demise. Just as I never had a problem with any of my MANY Dells. At work we have hundreds of Dells and they run fine till someone drops them more than once.

My ASUS has a buzzing power cube and its about 6 months old. They will not warranty it until it fails.

As they say your millage may vary. I am using the Acer right now running Linux on a 4 gig USB drive booted up. Nice!
