A1/B1 fuel economy oils.

A5/B5 higher specification fuel economy oils.

A3/B3 run of the mill oils for most petrol and diesels

B4 the oil spec for direct injection diesels.

C 1, 2, 3, 4. Mid and low saps oils

E 4, 5, 7 etc. HDEO for larger trucks and buses, which can usually be used in non heavy goods diesel vehicles if you do some cross checking of specs and indeed use APi specs.

Some vehicles sold in the UK and US have APi specs that relate to HDEO

My Taxi for example can use CI 4 Shell Rimula R6 LME Nd some Mobil Delvac.

You can get better info on the ACEA website but that is a generalised explanation

Good summary, but A3/B3 is hardly run of the mill in North America.

Garak, I was thinking the same thing. And not just in North America. ACEA A3 is the base line for some of the most stringent mfg specs out there.

I suppose he means it's more common in his neck of the woods, which I certainly would expect to be the case. Here, if you want something A3/B3 that's easy to find anywhere, it's pretty much GC or M1 0w-40.

You can find A3/B4 at WalMart as well:

Mobil 1 0W-40,
Mobil 1 HM 10w30 or 40, and
Valvoline Synpower 5W-40

I wish the M1 0W-40 came in jugs though.
