AC Delco has changed the part numbers on two of their filters. The PF44 is now PF46, and the PF58 is now PF61. Does anyone know what the difference is between these filters? I would assume they made some type of change in the media or internal construction. Hopefully for the better.

Thanks,

According to the Ac Delco website, the PF46 is called a "duraguard" filter, presumably meaning it has different innards than the PF44.

They changed something, but I haven't really looked into what the change was. Your probably OK using either one, but they made a change that required a new number. If the PF44 is no longer available you can probably assume the PF46 is backward compatible.

My PF46 only goes on one way.... ain't no backwards mounting to it!!!!

I know AC changed a couple other #'s that I know of...maybe more. PF25 went to PF454 and PF35 went to PF1218. These are for 5.7 GM's, with 1218 being being the longer of the two.

Oh.

So much for that great idea...

Actually the PF35 and PF1218 were sold side by side for many years, they are identical filters other than the fact that the PF35 has no ADBV while the PF1218 does. So I guess AC figured there was no reason to sell the PF35, since the 1218 could just replace the applications that originally called for the 35.

I was having the rear brakes checked on my 1993 Lumina last week and I overheard 2 techs at the Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealer talking about this. They were wondering the same thing. One mentioned he thought it was because of more imported parts, I think he was just trying to be cynical though.

Any slight change in the product could signal a new number even though it might not be for the better. Judging from the increases in foreign made parts, it could be that alone.

My 2002 Chevy Trailblazer originally spec'd the PF58. Then the '58 was discontinued and replaced with a PF61. Took one of each and cut them apart.

If someone can tell me how to post a picture I have pics of the filters cut apart.

Conclusion? The 58 has a little more filter media, but the 61 we took apart had a plastic flow director part added, that should make the oil flow more smoothly down over the top of the filter element. Apparently all '61s are not like that. Some I looked at on O'reilly's shelf did not say "Made in USA" on the box and did not have that plastic flow director. You should be able to see it through the entry holes.
