AC Delco (Blue) vs Supertech

In other words if on one hand you had the AC Delco (blue) and the other was a SuperTech and they both were same price which one would you choose?

Any takers.

I will say the AC Delco does not get as much credit as it deserves as a good OEM replacement filter bases on the online studies done by independent laymen.

Interstingly enough 2-3years ago Walmarts and K-Marts sold AC Delco filters in masse...then they suddenly started disappearing. I guess Champions SuperTech replaced the Delco sales?

I'd pick AC over Supertech, IMHO

I am with Rob. I would gladly pay a premium over Super Tech for real ACs, but can't find the PF 1177 and 2244G I need anymore. When I still had my Grand AM, I think I could still find the oversize PF 52 at Advance Auto, but nobody seems to stock more than a few of the most common numbers anymore.

As I keep harping about, the ST and many others have about 2/3 the filter area of an AC. The ST has slightly less than the others, but still has more than twice the area of the orange junk. Worse yet, I am, afraid Wal-Mart is dropping the ST 3950 I use, and all but the most popular ST numbers. Spread the word on agent orange.

I use the PF52 or the St3980, the St3980 has 85% the filter area that the PF52 has. ( I have cut them open and checked)..
The old Walmart version of the Pf52 is built just like the ST3980 (same mfgr) with the xception of the actual media content (material and filter area)
The Kmart version was the Delphi (same area as the Walmart version but fewer/deeper pleats)
The Pf52 has 244 sq in, the St3980 has 206 sq in.
Supposedly the St3980 filters finer, but I have not actually tested it.

The Champ Labs built Delco filter at Wal-Mart brings up further questions about their control of brand names. I have a friend who recently bought tires for her Focus. Wal-Mart has a house brand of tire (Douglas) which is manufactured by Kelly (Goodyear). My friend bought BFGoodrich Excentias, a branded tire available only at Wal-Mart.

I always thought the Champion Labs manufacture of AC Delco filters was for non-GM uses, but Wal-Mart's buying abilities as witnessed by their exclusive deal with Michelin(BFG) and I think other tires is eye opening. When I google Excentia I do get some German responses, so whether this is a German tire or just a brand name waiting for Wal-Mart to co-opt it I don't know.

To my untrained eye, the Excentias look about as good as BFG Radial T/A's available from the normal dealer network so my mentioning this is in no way questioning the qualities involved here, just that Wal-Mart buys one hell of a lot of stuff.

Are you saying the ST3980 is the PN# equivalent to the PF52?

Do SuperTechs and FRAM share the same numbering? For some reason that reminds me of a FRAM filter size?

Yep,
The ac pf52 = the st3980, I think the fram number is the 3980 too,,,,but I don't use Frams (any more anyway...) so I won't speak for them....(I haven't verified it in other words).
I use the PF52/ST3980 for Chevy S10 truck and Blazer.

Assuming i get a remote filter mount that can handle the extra weight:

Is their a OVERSIZE-EQUIVALENT filter bigger than the PF52??

It is interesting as Jegs says the HP301 is for 1982+ Chevy V8 engines. That is vague falsehood as LT1 and LT4 as well as a host of the V6 family engines can use the PF47 and PF52 easily.

Rob, I stopped back in at O'reilly today to pick up a few more 1218's but all they had was one---and it was a champion labs version. They did still have the 52 and 47 delphi versions though.

Well it doesn't make much difference anymore.......I just went last weekend to an AutoZone and Advance Autoparts store and saw that the blue AC Delco filters are now bonafide and absolutly made by Champion labs....the can and backplate are identical with the Bosch/SuperTech and the other Champions....even the letter imprint is the same.....of course I don't know about the filter material....

Luckily my g/f lives in NC and I just found out that their advance has a bunch of delphi delco's. I'm going down to clean them out in a couple weeks.
