I pick this car up at 50,000 miles. Gave it it's first tranny service filter a replace 4 out of the 12 capacity dexll with mobil1 atf. At 53,000 miles I sucked out four more qts from the dip stick and replaced with mobil1 atf. Fluid never looked that bad and now its super clean. What do you guys think about replacing 4 out of the 12 qt capacity every 10,000 and drop the pan filter change every 50,000?

Sounds good to me. It's kinda like what I have to do with my Honda.
FWIW, some of the older tech manuals showed a way where you could drill a small hole in the converter, drain it, and install a certain type of rivet (w/sealer of course). There were particular spots where it was safe to drill if done carefully. I did it a couple of times back in the '80s, in one case actually tapping the hole (the converter case was plenty thick) and installing a 1/8 tapered pipe plug. I'm not sure the job would translate to the newer versions, the 4L60 and 4L65.

What model year GM car/truck is this transmission in? Pre-'87 700R4's are notorious for not going much over 60k-70k miles before dying.

Frequent fluid replacement couldn't hurt. I have one of these beasts in my '87 IROC with 85k miles. So far, so good.
