About to flush my coolant system, considering running pure water.

When I refill the system I'm thinking about not going with a 50/50 mix. Instead I might just run pure water and add a bottle of water wetter. The only thing I'm concern with is will the water wetter be able to lube the water pump and T-Stat? If I have to I will run something like a 15% mix, if I go any higher the water wetter is not going to work. Think I could get by with just water wetter and water?

Don't do it. You will have a screwed up cooling system. Using water and water wetter is only for the race track where anti-freeze is not allowed.

Your plan will leave you with expensive damage. I've seen grown men cry when told of the expense to replace the radiator, heater core, freeze plugs, and all hoses because of the rust in the system in as little as a year of normal use.

Don't do it. I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish, but it certainly isn't going to work out well for you at all. As Jim alluded to, you're going to end up having seriously cooling problems in a short time - If you get any cooling benefits at all, they will probably be soon negated by the c_ap that starts on filling up your cooling system.

I guess..what you could do..is use the water water and a bottle of Zerex Super Protector. Although I'm still not sure if that's enough protection. If ya want to be safe, you could do 60% water/40% antifreeze and throw in the water wetter. That should be okay.

Maybe a tad off topic, but speaking of running a cooling system w/o antifreeze, would having distillted water in the radiator for 24 hours (and driving 20 miles) start up any corrosion? I did this before my last flush and for some reason I've been thinking about it.

I remember looking at the label on Water Wetter once and it mentioned that street vehicles must have at least 15% antifreeze by law.

Let's say that there will be no corrosion problems(ha-ha!). Let's just say.

There's something else to be considered. Antifreeze is not just anti*freeze*, it's also anti*boil*. Repeat, it's also anti*boil*. In Louisiana, in the summertime, antiboil is a *Very Good* thing!

At least here in West Louisiana(East Texas), we sure think so.

Why use tap water when distilled water is cheap? Use distilled water, so you won't have to worry about minerals building up on and corroding the interior of the cooling system parts.

You don't need Water Wetter, especially in a properly maintained cooling system. Water is already "wet" and the thermostat already keeps the coolant at the proper temp. If you go to Water Wetter's website and read their reasons for using it and give some thought to what you read you'll probably conclude that the product is a joke.

I'm a lawyer. I've never heard of any state mandating antifreeze use and can think of no reason why a state would have such a law, other than protecting people from the consequences of their dumb decision not to use antifreeze, and thankfully, we haven't reached that point yet in our governments' desire to mandate that we do what's good for us, whether we want to or not.

East Texas? I thought the new name of that state was Baja Oklahoma.

Even distilled water will cause problems. Water will pick up all the contamination it needs to cause troble from the metals in the cooling system. Distilled water won't help enough to even measure.

That may be true in Canada, but Americans have an inalianable right to stupidity.

Jim, that's one of those rumors that refuses to die.

I blame that football book written years ago as a sequel to "North Dallas Forty", "Semi-Tough", & I think a couple of others.

Here's the *real* scoop- Oklahoma is actually Tejas del Norte!

I have run pure water with Redline water wetter in Fiats and Minis for quite some time. I do not recommend it anymore. You still get too much corrosion even with the water wetter. If you are looking for maximum heat transfer, run about 25% antifreeze and change it every two years. Pure water is for the race track, they will not allow antifreeze.

Nah, Texas is B.O. Baja Oklahoma.
