I've never been a gardener, and I don't have a green thumb. However, living out here in the coastal desert, I have an interest in succulents and cactus. In this climate, it's very easy to grow succulents, and I've successfully planted some. I had never tried cactus, but I wanted to try. I found some pieces of [censored] pear cactus laying in the street recently, and thought, hey, no time like the present.
I found some articles on the internets that told me to basically stick these pieces in the ground and water them. So I did. After several weeks of a couple of them just sitting in the dirt, I was greeted with this:
Those little green things up at the top of the cactus are new growth. I'm actually pretty excited. I'm going to plant some more, and hopefully be able to transplant them to various places around my property. I have no interest in having a lawn, which is pretty unnatural and expensive in this area, but I do like cactus (and various succulents). Xeriscape, here I come!
