A right way to check Trans ATF?

I owned several brand of car (Honda, toyota, nissan). On the Toyota, checking the ATF level is easy, it has a hot mark and a cold mark. Nissan is the same thing. However, the honda only has 1 mark (min + max).

The manual say to check the ATF, some where in between min and max. That is all. I read some where and they recommend that checking the ATF when the car is HOT and RUNNING, shift from P -> 1 twice then check the fluid level.

I measured the car when I cold, not running, the ATF is way over the max (about 0.25in) but when I try the HOT method, it is in the middle of min and max.

I know that ATF should NOT be overfilled in any case so what is the RIGHT way to check ATF when your car has only 1 mark?

My 2002 Honda V6 has two marks. A 2003 Accord 4 cyl also has 2 marks. According to my owners manual, the procedure to check ATF level is this:

At normal operating temperature, on level ground, engine OFF.
Remove dipstick and wipe dipstick clean.
Put dipstick all the way in.
Remove dipstick.
Fluid level should be between upper and lower marks.


Note, most non Hondas ask to measure ATF with engine running at normal temp with trans in Neutral or Park.
