That's why my thought is the leak was from the crimp on the base of the can, not from the base gasket if you found the can was still plenty tight.
 
I have had a couple of filters loosen up over the years ( out of 100's changed ), leading to weaping and drips. No idea why, as I follow the exact same installation procedure every time I change a filter. When I got under the car, the filter was loose. As in two fingers broke the filter loose. The solution was to simply re-tighten the filter. No problems after re-tightening.

The only factor I could think of was that the suspect filters were at room temp, installed in the winter in a heated garage ( 50* F), and the outside temp was COLD ( 0* F ). Did the gasket shrink slightly in the cold, leading to a loose filter?
