Here's some good news, for once.

Got dish in nursing home

My son, who had ALS (Lou Gehrig disease) was in a far southwest nursing home. He was on a ventilator and could not leave the nursing home, as Medicare would not pay for the cost of home care.

The television reception was terrible in the suburb where my son was hospitalized. They do not have cable, and the only thing he could do was watch TV. He asked me to see if he could get DirecTV in his room.

I called them, and much to my surprise, they agreed to install a dish on the nursing home. A very nice gentleman came to the nursing home and had to crawl all over the balcony to get the cable to his room from the dish. It took over two hours, but the smile on my son's face when we turned it on was worth a million dollars.

This made his life much better in the final months before his death.

I assumed that I would be getting a separate bill for the installation and the service, as I lived 30 miles away in Chicago. Much to my surprise they did not charge for installation! All I had to pay was five dollars extra for the receiver. This saved me a bundle at a time when money was very tight.

After his death, I took the receiver home and several months went by. My daughter wanted another receiver for our home and when I called to transfer the service, again I was not charged a thing for the installation or to have an extra dish installed.

I am not sure if this is DirecTV's policy, or if the people that handled my call did this on their own after they heard my story, but they are heroes to me and I would like to thank them for the wonderful, caring service we received.

Merry Christmas to all- and may you-know-who bless us, every one.

(seems awful silly to have to type that on Christmas.)

Mom fell & broke her hip Monday night two weeks ago. Ambulance, surgery next morning, now in a *good* nursing home/rehab/therapy center, after spending 2 days in the nursing home from you-know-where! It's been a very hectic two weeks, & will continue for some time- and an unconventional Christmas. But there were leftovers from Thanksgiving in the freezer, so today when I went to visit we had dressing, turkey, & cranberry sauce. Her spirits are good, & I shudder to think what might have happened if I hadn't happened to be there when she fell. She might have lain there for days.

As it was, she was in the ambulance & en-route to the hospital within about 35 minutes.

Oh yeah- and in about a week, Happy New Year!

TnS - Nope, no Amsoil boxes shown, although I did use a few for gifts.

Stuart - Hope your mom makes a speedy full recovery.

We had an enjoyable Christmas. We had a spiral cut ham, I made a killer glaze with honey, JD Southwestern mustard, two kinds of mustard powder, orange juice and zest, cloves, parsley, thyme, etc for that bad boy. We had king crab legs and salmon and homemade Italian bread and squash cooked in lime juice and rosemary, and tons of other veggies....washed down with some Napa Cabernet. Dessert was an apple strudel with thickened vanilla cream sauce...
