hey guys - long time lurker here and just decided to join because of this jug of 15w40 supertech oil that i bought for my '68 El Camino. it has an HLPA date/time stamping on it just like the ones on my quarts of penzoil platinum. im just wondering if this indicates that it is a sopus product? TIA and i hope to become a full fleged member here soon and to be able to chat with you guys on the other forums.

I to have heard that some oils are made by Penzoil. I wouldn't doubt it in your case. Then there's those made by Warren. Either way, my buddy has been running the Wally-world stuff for at least 50K on his old chevy pick-up. Doesn't burn oil or anything even at 160K.

Yes, The HLPA stamp is from the Houston (Port Arthur) blend plant. In certain regions of the USA SOPUS supplies SuperTech oil.

What part of the USA are you in?

To me it obvious you are a long time listner first time caller... Nice to meet you! What do you think of the general public not knowing nothing about who makes SuperTech and yet they still use it because it is a bargain.
Bitogers absolutely must know every detail...

Diagnosis... You too are oil obsessed WELCOME and enjoy this wonderfully entertaining and informative site. Questions I have had since I was a child, I now have the answers at my fingertips...well about oil anyways...most of em anyways... there is still the mystery as to why dino performs just as good as syn out to 5000????

It wouldn't be unusual for a company like Wal-Mart to have several suppliers. Even larger lubricant companies contract out to fill short falls in production. I know I've been told Monarch makes most of Wal-Mart's motor oil, yet an employee told me that it is made by Shell Oil. I remember a while back Sears employees bragging that the Sears brand motor oil was made by Shell Oil. But you really never know. It's all made to the same specifications no matter who blended it.

Gremil, searching for Supertech will find yes, there are a few suppliers-namely SOPUS (Shell), Warren Performance Packaging aka Warren Distribution, and ExxonMobil.

But the ST dino at $1.64/qt is no bargin.

The Conoco TropArtic 5W30 'blend' at $1.68 IS & you know where it comes from consistently. (Conoco may be the best GrpII basestock going, just ask Ford/Motorcraft)

he has no proof...
and at $1.54, the ST is a gargain for my beater compared to $2.60+ for the MC.
running Qpower and PP synthetic in my F150 and Civic, respectively, since AAP had the BOGO sale.
