I'm thinking about installing a slip-on exhaust on my k8 suzuki gsx-r1000, that would eliminate the heavy stock cat converter, give me a cleaner look, better sound, and save some weight. The bike has closed-loop FI system, with a narrow band o2 sensor located on the cat converter. The slip-on exhauset does have a bung for the o2 sensor. From the factory, for optimal emissions the air/fuel ratio is set at the stoichiometric 14.7:1. This is little lean to begin with (optimal for performance is said to be between 13.8 and 14.2) and some claim that eliminating the cat would make the bike run even leaner.
So, could anyone speculate how lean is too lean (what a/f ratio) before one should start worrying about engine damage on the long run. I am planning on having the bike dynoed afterward to see the fuel curve, but I do not want to invest in unreliable FI tunning devices such as a power commander, unless I have to.
