Whats the difference? On my Honda and some other cars I have noticed, there is an A/C button, then there is a Max A/C button. Neither one feels cooler than the other so what is the difference?

Isn't max A/C just moving to recirc mode from normal A/C...after a while it should get cooler than normal A/C...but more stale in air quality over time.

Max A/C doesn't pull in any outside air. It recirculates the inside air so it should help to get inside cooled off on a really hot or humid day.

My '79 Pontiac Bonneville was like this. The AC system pulls the hot inside air on MAX AC, cools faster than cooling hot "fresh" outside air being drawn in.

Oh ok, well I always keep the recirculate function on.

Much of the benefit with max a/c is that you don't have to dehumidify the air again. Air being chilled consumes a lot of energy being dehumidified before it can be cooled.

I believe the car's cabin is porous enough that stale air isn't a big problem.

Max AC is recirc, which means it gets stuffy after a few minutes.

Does the cabin air filter keep filter the recirculating air? I don't know.

Max A/C always feels better to me, i never notice any stale air. The outside air in my city is awful, all kinds of factories that smell like maxlife atf, sulpher, meat products and the asphalt plant smells really weird.

Right...but...put it on regular AC with windows open for a few minutes when the car is really hot, transition to windows open 1/2" until you can really feel it cooling off, then roll them up and go Max AC. Fastest cooldown in my experience.

try that in Atlanta ga this summer.

My sig car automatically starts in fresh air and switches after a couple of minutes to recirculate. Seems to work much better than recirc only.

Seems logical to feed in outside air at 95 degrees versus inside air at 120 plus! Just for a couple of minutes and then recirc will achieve the "chill" we are looking for in a Florida summer...

There is always at least 10% fresh air coming through the vents in even on recirculation. It's a safety feature built into the duct work.

In both of my trucks, MAX is the same as recirculate.

I don't use it very often. Most of the time when I use it, it's to avoid a smell situation if I have time. IE...old diesel truck or bus ahead of me rolling coal because it's old and worn out.

My 2002 has black paint and gets VERY hot in the sun, so recirc won't do much of anything right off the bat because the inside of the truck is probably over 100*F. On a really hot day, I will run regular A/C for a few minutes, then maybe switch over to recirc if I want even more cold. Usually though my truck is blowing very cold air within a minute, and I actually have to turn the temp up or just turn the A/C off, so I never end up switching to recirc.

My truck is venting outside air most of the time, so I don't know how it would be with A/C odors on recirc all the time, but I have been in some cars that spend a lot of time in recirc where there is an odor from the vents...that sort of sour mold smell. We have an '04 or '05 Kia Rio beater at work that is on recirc most of the time, and that car has some funky smelling HVAC to say the least.

Use recirc for cooler air especially in an area with high humidity. If someone in the car is gassy use regular circulation.

On my DD, Max which recirculates the air blows more air out the dash vents, less flow lower at the feet.
Normal AC, less flow at the dash vents because more (not most) blows at the feet - don't know if it's 50/50 dash/feet. Also, normal blows some at floor level for the passenger behind the driver set.

Ford decided on this for the '95 up Ranger...

- A/C - blows from dash vents
- MAX A/C (recirc) - blows from dash vents
- Dash/Floor - splits 50/50 between dash and floor vents, runs A/C compressor...if you want A/C at the dash and floor, you use this setting even though it isn't marked as A/C
- Vent Dash - outside air only
- Vent Floor - outside air only
- Defrost/Floor - runs compressor
- Defrost - runs compressor

My '94 has a slide selector for the vent settings, and a button (press in on the fan speed switch) to turn on A/C, so it actually has more options than my newer truck since it can recirc without running the compressor.

This isn't true. It will still cycle to avoid freezing up.

Otherwise running "MAX AC" with low fan speed would generate a freeze-up fast.

*disclaimer at least on modern cars*
