A/C cools below set point

Hi all,

Just moved into a new apartment. First thing wrong was they had the fan limit switch set to manual so the fan ran constantly. Took me about 2 days to figure that one out.

Now the issue I am having is it running when it shouldn't. For example, last night, it is set to about 74, it's about 72 in the apartment and it keeps coming on. By the time I went to bed it had cooled it to 70. The thermostat has a built in thermometer so how it can be getting confused is beyond me. I have a separate thermometer that confirms that it cools below the set point. It's been set on 74 for days and neither thermometer has gone up to 74.

I have no idea what to do or why it's even doing that. It's a split system, the furnace looks like a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice from Detroit but the A/C system is brand new. Any ideas, tips would be much appreciated. Trying to keep the utility bill as low as possible!

I really wish I had this problem in my vehicle. Some days my AC is just barely enough, others it feels like it was designed to cool a car the size of a mason jar.

Isn't this something the apartment management should cover though? Have you checked the wiring?

Ever think of setting it a couple of degrees higher if it's too cool for you?

most likely your temp anticipator is set to far apart adjust it so the swing in temp is tighter.IE comes on at 74 off at 73

That's pretty much the cheapest, low grade thermostat possible. Chances are it needs calibrated, which your apartment maintenance person should be capable of doing. Or if you prefer to do it yourself, a minute or two on Google should provide all the answers you need to calibrate a thermostat. It's pretty simple.

The thermostat is off a few degrees set it higher ...GEEZ. And no don't tighten the anticipater to only 1 degree. cycling the compressor on and off too quickly is not good.

A correctly sized AC unit should come on and stay on cooling and pulling humidity then cycle off for awhile.

change setting to 76 degrees instead of 74 . Problem Solved!

they probably had the blower set to manual/on because they cleaned the carpet, or for fresh paint to dry.

to keep utility bill as low as possible, turn AC off and open windows.

Is the stat mounted in a place where it doesn't see the cold air. Uneven cooling is always a potential problem with "one size fits all" ductwork. You may have to fiddle with the vents which ought to be adjustable.

replace the thermostat with something thats not a pile of poop?
about 25$? if not able to(apartment) ask them to calibrate it or replace it.

I set mine at 82 during the day and 80 in the evening, the A/C is rarely running. Only when humility is above 60-70% I lower the thermostat to 77-78 then the A/C is running. My summer electricity costs me another $15-25 a month above winter months.
