My '99 starts then stalls,security light stays on solid so i know that's the problem,had this problem this summer but it came out of it now it's doing it again,anybody have any experience of this and your fix? hate to haul it into the dealer but i will if i have too. Tried some relearn fixes off the web i found but no luck my ignition must be bad and not sending the right resistance code to the BCM.

Ignition switch or key cylinder is probably bad. Or both. If you don't want to waste money replacing parts unnecessarily it will need to go to a qualified repair center.
Yea thats what I'm saying could try a by pass i found but if it don't work I'm stuck with more lost time,she's my work truck so i need it going.

My mom's 2004 Chevy Malibu Classic had this problem.
The fix is to wire a 2.2K ohm resistor in place of the one in the ignition switch and then do a re-learn.

Often misdiagnosed as a failing fuel pump, a problem with the late 90's GM is the security system's seizure and cut-off of fuel delivery to the engine, resulting in the vehicle not starting or stalling while driving. It is not known exactly what triggers this to happen, but it can be diagnosed by turning the key to the "ON" position and checking for the "SECURITY" light on the dashboard. To reset the security system, leave the key in the ignition in the "ON" position for ten minutes. This problem will continue to occur, however, and a replaced ignition switch should relieve the problem.
Except you don't need to replace the ignition switch if you bypass it with a resistor.

Depends on if the switch is the problem or the key cylinder.

Now see my light will not go out in ten minutes with key "on",i had it on over 1 hr and it was still on so it must be a hard fault in the ignition switch

Another GM attempt to keep you out of your own car, while thieves just hijack you after you already have it running! As for the fix, that resistor thing doesn't always work, and most likely you will have to replace the ignition lock and keyset. They are pricey at the stealer, but not quite as bad on EBAY.
No chip in this key it's a passlock lock system not a pass key,it's a blank key and tim yea i hear ya..
anyway got mad and hauled it to my GM stealership so hopefully i don't get raped to bad! i think it's just in the ignition lock/switch. I'll post bad with the news...

I am figuring about 4-600 bucks. I had the pleasure of messing with the passlock system on more than one occasion on the daughters '96 Grand Am. That, among other items, is another reason I am not a fan of GM. Please let us know what they say/charge.

Update...
got back from the stealer this afternoon not great but could have been worse i guess dealing with this type of system can really add up in parts, total bill was $342.
problem was a code B1631 in the TDS, TD module was bad,replaced the module did the relearn and back in business.

Theft deterrent Module
Once the key(s) for our '99 Malibu start to wear out, the theft system will start activating itself when trying to start the car. Usually at un-opportune times.
The fix for us has been newly copied keys. They seem to last about a year before tripping it again.

That's what i though too I'd try but obviously that wouldn't have worked because that wasn't the problem area.
