Just bought a 98 Mustang 3.8 for my daughter. Questionable history on maintenance. Lady I bought it from had recent oil change from a "jiffy lube" place. They said it was sludged, etc.
I looked under the filler and the rockers were pretty clean. Had generic Oil filter, etc.

Engine has a slight lifter tick, just off idle.

I plan on going with a MC 400 s oil filter and changing to Pennzoil conventional for a few short runs (1K miles), and maybe a qt of MMO.

Does this sound like a decent clean session?

Thanks,
Dave

Sounds like a good plan, that way you will see if it uses any oil before going to a syn. Pennzoil Conventional is perfect and cost effective.

Even though I love MMO n the fuel, forego it in the crankcase at this point in that car.
A good cleaning oil is all I'd use, esp sice you see no build up.

I would use a 10w30 if I chose to use the conventional stuff. Less shear prone and Florida temps probably don't justify the need for a 5w.
You might give Pennzoil High Mileage a look if you like SOPUS products.

Okay, gonna skip MMO and just run Pennzoil Conventional and a MC 400s filter. I will let the oil do the cleaning. May run Pennzoil Conventional for a while, then go to Penz Platinum... Of course 5w.30.
