I just picked up a 98 Dodge Durango with 200+k on original engine & trans. 2nd gear slips a little bit. The owner had flush and fills done but didnt change the pan filter. He gave me a new filter with the truck so I plan on dropping the trans and changing it out. What fluid do you guys reccommend I replace in the trans? Should I put any LubeGard in it, if so which one? I just want this truck to get me throught the winter without any hiccups. Also since its 4wd, any reccommendations on the transfer case fluid? It seems to engage and work just fine.

Yeah. Until you figure out the issue with the shifting, stick with the cheapest spec'd fluid. If the LubeGuard works ..then you can plan on something later if you still own it. Synth in the transfer case is optional depending on if you're going to have an LTR with this vehicle.

Is this just some winter beater that you're going to ditch come Spring??

The transmission has adjustable bands...maybe time for
a service.
Ive been investigating the possibilites to
use dex3 inst of +4 but it seems like no one have tried.
Mother says +3 in trans and case, that means +4 nowdays.

Indeed it does. Well worth checking into.

..and, yes, +4 should be all that he can find.

I had 3 of those trucks...loved them all. Never a trans issue and always used the mopar fluid because my dealer would price match the other brands. Do get the bands adjusted. Make sure you change the diffs too. If I remember they were 80w90 and I used valvoline dino in them and changed every 25k (I think the book said every 15k) but that was excessive.

The diffs came with syn from factory.
use 75w-90 with ls supplement.
Dont forget the transfer case, +4 there to.
(i was going to use THF but cickend out, still i do belive
that THF would be great there.)
Do a turkey blaster change in the ps. I do mine
every oil change and the fluid looks brand new (part change, suck it out and fill up with new ps fluid.)

Does anyone have an alldata which they can send me that shows how to adjust the bands as well as tighten the gear box up? I used to have access to alldata for such things, but dont anymore. Trying to limit my expenses on this truck to fluid swaps and gaskets for the winter besides a cheap pair of brake shoes!

Gary, thank you much for the link. When I drop the pan I will try to adjust the bands. I am hoping the leak is just a seal as I know I have a high pressure power steering hose that is leaking like ole faithfull.

I have some 6 bottles of Conventional Valvoline 80/75W90, do you think that will be okay to swap in the diffs for 1 winters use instead of synthetic until I have next spring and summer to investigate a little further into this beast? I will be spending the money for fresh +4 for the transfer case and transmission.

Yes, I always used valvoline 80w90 in mine. Never a problem. It just won't last as long as synthetic. But you will get 15-20k easy.
