Going to look at '97 Buick Skylark tomorrow, any known issues with this car? It has the 3.1 with about 125,000 miles. Didn't know if anybody had any first-hand experience with this year car, and knew of things to watch out for? Any input is much appreciated!

Just look for your "typical" GM problems:

warped brakes
intake gasket issues
slamming transmission
wonky e-brake
piston slap
Scan for OBD-II completeness
Passkey security issues.

Too much to list if you don't know the maintenance history. Cooling system/gasket problems are the major problem.

look at reviews for pontiac grand am, and oldsmobile achieva models from the same time frame, those would be the sibling models for that car.

Ok thanks for the replies. The owner said he has had the intake gasket replaced and has the receipts. Needing a reliable beater car in this price range, seems like a decent candidate but I'll know more tomorrow after I look at it. I like the relatively low miles, just hope there isn't any transmission issues.

Well took it for a test ride....and it died on the side of the road lol! His wife had to come pick us up. Not sure why it stopped running, the fuel pump was working and seemed like it had spark. Oh well, the search continues, dodged a bullet i guess.

i had a 1996 with V6. i loved it but it had some quirks- brake rotors warped at 15k. water leaked into interior and GM could not find source of leak. if i left car outside, i found water in rear pass side. i traded in car in 2005 and later read that these and Achiva/grand ams had a similar leak that required taking apart molding at bade of windshield...CHECK CARPETS for WATER DAMAGE
