96 Protege 1.5L oil ?

Ok guys.. Asking a quick question..

A buddy bought a 96 protege with a 1.5 in it and a manual trans @172k miles. I do all his repair/maintenance work for him.. He brought me the car after he bought it for me to look it over. It runs really good, doesn't seem to leak(didn't put on lift yet, just glanced under), clutch is strong etc..


So it seems previous owner did good maintenance to engine/trans at initial glance. But body is in rough rough shape..

as I was looking over car I found in the trunk a bottle of a stop leak/smoke. And it was nearly all used.. Which makes me worry for the engine.. It was full of oil and looked decent.. The I went deeper, coolant needs a change, straight brown.. So my first glance isn't seeming too correct now...

What weight should i use in it? Calls for 10w30, thinking that or going 10w40. Ain't gonna hurt anything.. I'll use either Valvoline conventional, ML, or PU in it, depending on friends budget...

Since winter is coming, I would put in 5w30 myself. You will get better start up flow at low temps while still using correct grade as called for. You could also consider Castrol 0w30 if you can find that oil. Really good product.

+1, or if you notice leaking/burning, try a 5/10w40 or go with Maxlife

My daughter is driving our 99' LX which has the 1.6 L engine. If the oil filter is in the same location as ours is, I highly suggest you put in a better quality oil filter (I use Puralator Pure Ones) and keep it on for two oil changes. I used all kinds of oils, (Always 5w30) but ours has never consummed any oil. Before I'd switch to any "High Mileage" oil, I'd make sure it's really using any oil. A regular Conventional oil (Mobil 5000 is exc. IMO) 5w30 is what I'd use or if it's uses a little oil try a 10w30. Great little cars!

I didn't ask bout filters.. And no I won't EVER use a filter for 2 OC's. It'll get a real good filter.. Have to look up what filter size it is. It'll likely get a motorcraft..

The oil filter is on the side of the block towards the top of the engine on the 1.6 L. Makes a little mess, though not too bad. Hope yours is in a better location for easier oil changes.

make sure you buy a filter with a good ADBV; AAP drive works aren't it; If you want 6 or 7 anyway I can send them for cost of postage.

A heavy 5w20 won't kill that 1.5L. Ran MC 5w20 in the Aspire's 1.3L (same design).. got excellent mileage and ran great.
