'96 Pathfinder - 16.9 mpg - Pathetic!

Even this ole peach which is essentially a new 33yr old car is no great shakes economy-wise. I think Nissan rated it at 29/35 and since it never sees the freeway just bumper to bumper rush hour traffic, 350km per 50L tank is as good as it gets. That ain't very good I know...

If you have a mechanical fan and are willing to mod it to electrical that could cut some drag for the driving that you say you do.

Nissan and Toyota never impressed for mileage= even far newer models. Best you can do is tune up to newish spec. Maybe tires, get a full boar injector cleaning, make sure air tract is in good condition. Maybe a scan for proper function, timing...

In city bumper to bumper traffic 16.5 mpg which is what that crunches to still seems too low. My 6.0 4wd yukon xl in the worst city driving still got 12 mpg.

Another free MPG item to is to make sure the brakes drag as little as possible. Make sure the rear wheel cylinders move freely, the shoes slide smoothly over rust free backing plates and are not adjusted too tight. Same for the front... Make sure the calipers operate freely and clean and lube the slide pins.

The most effective thing for economy is also free. Wear suspenders and a trucker cap and keep your turn signal on all the time. 👴

They were a nice suv !
rugged and reliable but fuel economy wasn't there thing doubt you will get much more out of it.

You might have to start doing what I do, drive 10 mph below the speed limit everywhere you go.

It's really pointless to drive the speed limit anyway because all you accomplish is waiting longer at the red light.
I wondered who was in front of me doing 32 in a 45 yesterday.. for 12miles with a line about 1/4 mile long behind them driving side to side similar to a nascar tire warmup.

On a roadtrip it gets almost 600kms on the same tank. The city mileage is abysmal but I drive it hard and it's rush hour to and from work, idling while I wait to pick my wife up from work. I'm due to fill up soon so I'll get a more accurate total as my gas guauge was acting up until the large bottle of Techron fixed it. It was showing dead empty and always had ~15L left in the tank. I'll drive till the light goes on and see where it's at🤔

So, uh, you have a 30 year old truck.

And it gets the EPA mileage that it was promised to get?

Can I change your title to “1996 Pathfinder - 16.9 MPG - amazing!” - because, frankly, you should be amazed that a 30 year old truck gets the expected MPG.

My 1990 4 Runner - which had far less power, got 14 MPG in town, 17 MPG on the highway.

Welcome to the 90s.
