just out of curiosity.. does anyone know what oil GM used in the 93-97 F-body LT1 cars back then? I know certain vettes of that era were spec. for mobil 1, but not F-cars.

My '96 Manual just lists a 5W30 API SH oil as "preferred." 10W30 is allowed at temps above 0°F, and "if neither 5W or 10W oils are available, SAE 30 may be used at temps above 40°F."

FWIW I used to use Valvoline MaxLife 5w30 in my sister's old '94 Firebird Formula with the LT1, it seemed to like it and stopped a small leak it had.

My 97 Z28 manual lists 5w30 as preferred too. I think they just put plain old 5w30 in them from the factory. The vettes did have the Mobil 1 deal with them. I imagine it was more of a marketing thing than anything.

I've been trying to find a good oil for my car. I've been using German Castrol 0w30 and find my engine makes a lot more noise.
I'm changing my oil today with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 to see how that goes. If that does not quiet it down I'm going to try some Maxlife.

so it was really no particular brand.. just whatever was cheapest at the time and met the certification requirements?

on a side note i'm gonna try valvoline maxlife 5w30 and a powerflo filter (identical to purolator) for $2!

prolly go back to 10w30 or 10w40 maxlife when it gets summer again.

Only the Corvette LT1's were factory filled with Mobil 1 and spec'd for GM4871. This covers the 1992 thru 1996 Corvette LT1's and the 1996 LT4's. I've used nothing but MObil 1 in my 94 Corvette LT1 with fine results.
