Just got this 4Runner and put a used engine into it, along with some other necessary repairs. The "new" used engine had about 190,000 miles, and showed good compression all around. I didn't do the work myself, I had a local guy who specializes in old 4Runners do it.

Anyway, my work van is giving me some troubles, and I didn't want to drive it from San Diego to Beverly hills at this point, but I had some work to bid up there. It's about a 280-mile round trip, so I figured this is a good time to see how the 4Runner handles an extended highway run, get the oil hot, etc. I recently changed the oil with Pennzoil Conventional and an OCOD, and flushed the cooling system and put 50/50 Peak Long Life and distilled water in it, so off we went.

Everything was fine. The A/C still has a few kinks to be worked out, so I drove with the windows open. I used the cruise control quite a bit, and while it's jerky, it worked. I have a friend who has a '92, and he says his cruise control is like that, too. I got about 17.3 mpg, which isn't too spectacular, but quite a bit better than my van would have done.

Particulars: '91 4Runner 2WD, 3.0 V6, 4-spd. auto, 233,000 miles on unit, ~191,000 on engine. Chassis has some Doetsch Tech parts, I haven't taken a close look to see what all was done, but it sits pretty high, and the ride is firm but reasonably compliant. 32x11.50x15R BF Goodrich All-Terrain TA KO radials.
