My AWD Toyota Land Cruiser specifies 2.9 quarts GL5 75w90 for the front diff.

While changing out my front diff fluid, I ran out of 75w90.

I was able to fill my diff with:
~2.0 quarts 75w90 GL5 non-synthetic Coastal brand
and
~0.9 quarts Mobil 1 EP 5w30 engine oil
and
an ounce of Lube Control

Will it be OK? Long term? Short Term? Any other comments?

Thanks!

any clean lube is better than NO lube you may have a 80wt in there I would not worry to much but IMHO i would look to change out to correct oil with in a few weeks.

at the price of Toyota Landcruiser diff parts, I would change immediately and put in a full synthetic 75w90 or 80w90 such as Amsoils Severe Duty

I'm curious as to your thought process. Why would you approach a 2.9 qt job with 2 quarts?

LC? Is it really filthy? I wouldn't thin my gear oil with that stuff unless I knew for certain I would be cleaning some goo or was driven by a bad UOA.

Lastly - I would get that brew out of there, yesterday. Bruce might be right for a couple low load drives, then simply get the correct fluid in there.

The engine oil doesn't have the right additive chemistry for this application and the LC20 is essentially a 20wt solvent.

I'd drain the diff ASAP and fill it with the proper fluid. Even the cheapest GL5, gear lube would be preferrable to the mix you have in there.

I second the concerns. The Mobil 1 PCMO and lube control will thin your diffy lube to a point where it will not provide the proper film strength for sustained lubrication.

As others have stated, the PCMO does NOT contain the proper additive chemistry, so drain it at the first available opportunity and get back to a 100% diffy lube.

Yeah, it was very filthy.

I started the job with 2 quarts because I thought the capacity was 1.7 quarts...turns out I mistakenly read the capacity for the transfer case!

I will order MolaKule's Specialty Formulations 75w90 gear oil to do the transfer case and front/rear diffs.
