Allright, sooo many 75W90 synthetic gear oils out there. Royal purple,Mobile one,Amsoil,Red line,Valvoline,Lucas,etc...the list goes on.

Be allright with any of these? Recommendations?

GM corperate 8.6" with the G80 option.

I've had excellent success with the Amsoil Severe Gear in my Sierra and highly recommend it.

I run RP Max Gear 75w90 in the front and plan to change out the Mobil 1 soon in the rear of my 00' Z71 w/ G80 3.73 gear. I really like the film strength of RP oils, this stuff sticks to metal.

I use Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 in the front and rear diffs my Silverado and it works perfectly. I have the G80 option as well, so no additives are recomended.

Is the "G80" the limited slip differential??

I had a 2005 Silverado w/ the G80 and a 2007( NBS ) Silverado with the G80 and I ran RP 75W-90 F&R. Works great.

Normal driving 2WD = 30K. With towing or some 4WD use and every 15K. I would never go 100K on any gear oil let alone the GM stuff.

The FF fluid in your 08 Silverado is a GL-5 synthetic 75W-90 called Grape Juice by most people. GM part# is 89021677

It is a grape scented fluid I kid you not. It is mediocre quality fluid. I "THINK" Mobil makes it for GM but not 100% sure on that. The stuff is outrageously expensive at $25-$30+ a qt.

RP, Redline, or Amsoil gear oil for $12-$18 a qt is a much better deal and a superior fluid. You need 3 qts to do the service( won't use quite all of it ).

Cool, Thanks!! I just turned 48k, so I guess I should go ahead and do it. Is this a project I can do myself, or do I need to take it somewhere? I'm certainly no mechanic, but I love reading and learning about all this stuff.

One more question, what about the trans fluid? Once again, the manual recommends 50k for severe service and 100k for normal which is the category I fall into. Again, TIA!

I change my A/T fluid every 25k using the cooler line flush method. I wouldn't recommend everyone do it that often, but I do because it is simple to do.

I'm in the same boat as you on the differential. I had my local dealership do it at around 25k miles, but am needing to do it again soon. I figure I'll give it a try myself this time, but I have alot of difficulty understanding how to find out what I need and what rear end my truck has in it.

NHHEMI,

You have stated the very same before with no basis. The fluid is supposed to be supplied by Petro Canada and is reported to be of very high quality. Expensive? Yes. But to keep insisting the others you mention are 'superior' is not responsible. What factual information do you have?

Grape Juice worth the cost? Maybe not, but again doesn't mean RP or any other is superior.

I agree. Nothing has ever pointed to Grape Juice being any but a very high quality fluid.

I have personally seen numerous clunking and shuddering Eaton lockers (G80) in GM trucks "cured" by switching back to Grape Juice after the owners had filled with a "high quality" gear lube.

HondaMan( hmm a "Honda Man" chastising me in defense of a GM fluid now that is
lol.gif
)& Mr.Horspwer;

I have used the GM product and I have used RP and RL( I base adding Amsoil on all the good you hear about it ). The GJ returned very poor results in the 2 Silverado's I have owned with the G80 in them which is the specific truck and rear end we are talking about. VERY POOR performance actually( shudder, bang, hanging up, etc... ). Replaced it with RP both times and it was a huge and immediate improvement.

That is what I base my comments on. Actual use of the products in question. You can also visit any GM truck or small suv/cuv forum and read where it is a poor performer and when replaced by one of those 3 quality aftermarket brands things improve.

My comments are not baseless nor irresponsible either HondaMan. Based on actual personal use of the product as well as reading countless siimilar experiences from those with the samme vehicles using the same products.

That is good enough for me. You decide what is good enough for you.
