75W-85 in place of 75W-90

75W90 is generally synthetic, 75W85 is generally not. “Can” you use it? Yes. “Should” you use it? Depends…

I am not based in USA. The climate in my city is on average is mild. The only hot months are May-July when temperature cross 40C. The December and January are the two most coldest months with temperatures between 0C-5C (at night). Rest of the year stays mild.
I mostly do short trips with 15 miles or less.
I have not decided the oil yet.

What??? Pretty sure there are plenty of 75w-85 synthetics. Can you name some non-synthetics? I don’t pay attention to everything, so maybe you have a valid point, though perhaps overstated. Redline, HPL make 75w85….i presume synthetic. I THINK Motorcraft 75w-85 is full synthetic. If you are hung up on GrpIV vs III, then maybe the Motorcraft drops out. I have no knowledge of AC Delco/GM, Toyota or FCA. And maybe you aren’t asking about gear oil per se (vs MT or transfer case fluid?)
I will say, the 2nd half of your statement makes more sense…though opposite of what OP was asking about: say you bought a vehicle with factory 75w-85: should you replace with 75w-90? I wish I had been more effective trying to convince @SubieRubyRoo to include Motorcraft 75w-85 in his Mega 75w-90 comparison tests.

The vehicle is Seres 3 EV. The owners manual state 75W-90 GL-4 should be used as a reducer oil.
Think of reducer as single speed transmission in EVs.
