75w-85 , I can't find it !

Hey Oil People
I have an 05 Altima, 5 speed and I am going to be changing the transmission fluid.
The Manual specs a 75w-85 gear oil GL-4

I can only find a 75w-90 GL-5 gear oil,
Can this be used in my altima's transmission,

or should I only use the nissan oil ???

DO NOT USE GL-5 ONLY GEAR OIL. If you are concerned about your power train warranty, get the Nissan fluid, which is over priced and nothing worth raving about.

As of February 03 (TSB NTB03-015), Nissan began specifying 75W85 in their manuals as a bandaid fix for their notchy linkages/synchros. Prior to that, the factory fills were 75W90 GL-4 gear oils.

Amsoil and Redline make 75W90 GL-4 syn gear oils. Both improved the notchiness in my 5 speed, but did not totally eliminate it. Of the two, I prefer Amsoil (MTG). You can also find 75W90 GL-4/5 combos, but I personally am not sold on them.

I would go with this as well: MTG

The 100° C vis at 13.8 cSt is very close/within the realm of the of the upper SAE 85 range, so it will work great!

I use their MTL-P which is a GL4/5 75W-85. Terrific stuff.

75W-85 is easy to find on-line, just hard to find locally outside of the stealership.

Castrol Syntorque GL4 synthetic is available at Dodge dealers as a fill for the 5 spd transmissions in their trucks, or from Standard Transmission, both hitting close to $15 a qt.

Even though it is safe to use the 75w90(since that is what Nissan has used for years), reread ccs2k1 reply. It depends on your transmission shift feel and that cold northern weather. I'd stick with a 75w85 fluid.

SF is the only aftermarket 75w85 available.
The dealers(whether Nissan/Hyundai/GM/Dodge) also have their equivalent 75w85 fluids.

Another option is to mix your own.
Using Redline, MTL + MT90 can be mixed.
Or try an Amsoil MTG & MTF mixture.

Good point, unD that's why I wrote the viscosity of MTG, it's within the realm of an 85. (But transmissions and people have personalities...

)
